Fantastic Hiking Boots.
Let me start out by saying that while I am not much of an avid hiker, these are by far my favorite shoes. I wear them multiple days a week just because they're so comfortable and I like the look. They do tend to run small. I normally wear a men's size 8.5 and when I received those and tried them on, I immediately sent them back and ordered a half-size larger. Those size 9s fit perfectly. These shoes/boots are durable. I've had them now for about 4 years and they STILL look great. The soles have good traction and they do repel water pretty well. I haven't hiked down the middle of a stream, but I have stepped through them and my feet stayed dry. For rainy days, they work great. Arch support is good as well. I have high arches and often have to swap out the insole to something with more support. Not so with these. Overall, these are great boots. When you consider the price for what you get, they are fantastic. I really have no idea why I waited so long to review them, but here you go. I own the mid-height and am just now purchasing another pair in the low-height. Highly recommended.

Really comfortable shoe
I have tried other hiking boots/shoes and I am always happy with Merrell. I buy others for price benefits, but you get what you pay for. These shoes feel great immediately; as if they were specifically made for me. I have a wider foot and flat footed as well. While the support with the shoe would most likely be sufficient for my flat feet, I still buy my own insoles. Habit. Foot comfort is key regardless the task. I walk 2-4 miles a day with my dog. I can wear boots out quickly. These Merrells hold their own, though. I can almost get a year out of a pair. The shoe itself is still in great shape usually, but the soles wear according to my gait and that is the reason for getting a new pair. I like the above ankle shoe/boot. It offers enough ankle support still without being a boot. It has great traction. Difficult to walk in new ones due to such great traction and width of sole, but that’s probably because I get used to walking in my worn out ones.🤷🏻♂️ Warm enough for Michigan Winters. The waterproofing is great, too. Spring in Michigan can be extremely wet. 2-4 miles walking in wet grass or puddles, it is nice to have dry feet at the end (well, during as well). I think I may be finished shopping around. I’ve had Raichle, Red Wing, Keen, Field and Stream, and Salomon to name a few. All of those were good as well, but either discontinued a style or changed manufacturing which changed the product. I’ll just stick with these Merrells as long as they maintain their quality. You may benefit from doing what I’m doing and just sticking with what works (for me), which is Merrell.

Great purchase
My husbands loves these boots, these are the second pair he gets, way comfy for work because he has to stand almost all day in work and these works great, super breathable which it's important for him. True to size. And the color doesn't fade away.

Comfortable and snug but needs better slip resistance.
These fit exactly as expected and were both very comfortable during my first 10 mile hike while wearing them, and also nice and snug so that there was support on craggy rocks when my ankle was turned. The sole offered protection from the sharp rocks but was sufficiently flexible so that it was a comfortable hike. I've not had a chance to check on the effectiveness of the waterproofing, but the design of the tongue should help mitigate water from entering into the shoe if I slip while crossing a creek. Overall, I'm satisfied with the quality and price paid. FOLLOWUP: 13 months since this review. I deleted one star. I have had several occasions now to test the waterproofing and, as many have said, it's water-resistant not waterproof. It's not bad, I've had no serious issues and I do apply some waterproofing spray now and then which helps. I've stepped into creeks while crossing and have not had real wetness to deal with unless I went above the ankle and no amount of waterproofing will stop water from coming in over the top of the boot. So, all in all, I give the waterproofing 3 stars, not bad, not great but regular applications of a protective spray will help. I'm not a serious hiker, but I am a regular hiker and average 8 - 12 miles a week, so after more than a year, I've probably put about 500 miles on these. Most of the trails I hike are very rocky with a lot of loose, sharp, and irregular stones. These are trails where a solid boot with good protection is a requirement. I have found that these boots are protective and remain comfortable. They have also, despite some reviews, held up well. The sole has more than a few chunks missing, that's what happens when you walk on jagged rocks. They are still in good enough shape that I can expect at least another year out of them. The reason I dropped a star from my initial rating was not due to their waterproofing; as I said it's not great but adequate. In fact, for some people, this could still be a five-star product but for me, it's actually about a 2 star. I would not rate it overall as two-star because that would be unfair for readers whose hiking conditions differ from mine. I would expect that a boot that considers itself waterproof to have a "sticky" sole. If you're walking on wet rocks you want the sole to grip. These soles are slippery when wet. More than that, since I mostly hike in the desert, the rocks often have a very fine layer of sand on them which is the equivalent of millions of tiny ball bearings across the surface of the rock. I have slipped and lost my balance more often than I can count, this week I took a fairly serious fall and sprained my ankle. I was hoping that as I continued to use these boots that the sole would roughen up and grip better than they do. It's apparent that the sole was designed to be hard enough to offer protection (and still remain flexible and comfortable) but it fails in protecting from slipping or sliding when crossing a wet surface or more often in my case, a surface covered with fine sand. I would trade this durable and protective sole for one that was a bit less durable, a bit less protective, but one which also offered better slip resistance. If I was hiking on different terrain, this might not be an issue but the trails that I hike most often are not suited to this sole. It's too bad since this is a serious, and potentially dangerous issue for me. Other than that, I think it's a great boot, but I will need to find another that has a more practical sole for my purposes.

using Merrell shoe for trekking for many years; usually i buy at the shop; this time no shop had it and hence ordered on-line and it is not as wide as i expected or previous shoes which did not even have "wide" on the box. Next time need to order one size bigger i guess and hope present ones expand a bit after using few times and break-in

Use these as a mechanic everyday, through grease, grime, wet and all sorts of crud. I will never wear steel toe boots as they destroy my feet, I'm a sensitive boy. They don't last forever in these conditions but they are the most comfortable boot on the market and always keep my feet warm. I've purchased 7 or 8 variations over 5 years of this boot and never had any manufacturing issues or failures. The "wide" option allows me to fit a velvety soft memory foam insert and keeps my bones happy. Yeah boy.
