Q: i have some 3.5"h x 3.0"d unused candles. will these fit in this holder? its suggested a "candle holder" if not voltive type, is there one that fits?

That may actually be too big I would use the little tea light candles in the little aluminum circles they are maybe half an inch tall

Q: Will putting fairy string lights inside give as good of an effect as a tea light to cast the shadow from the top of the lantern's metal design?

Fairy lights look super in this lantern! I have about 4 other colors of this same lantern & have the timed fairy lights in each of them. It really brightens up the lanterns & are very pretty & cheerful.

Q: do they come with chains to hang them?

Just the ring at the top. If you're looking for an inexpensive chain go to a hardware store in the electrical section and look for swag hook chain for pendant lamps. Usually $4 for 18-24" chain that you can easily pry open to attach the ring. Comes in several finishes.

Q: what size candle will fit into these?
