Bought for my 6 yr old grandson and he loved it. he has a number of books in the same series .they are set out in a very readable way for younger readers with great illustrations-making learning fun.

This book is on par with the Usborne Beginner Science series. While it is listed as Level 2, I would say it is not particularly wordy and pretty simplistic. My 3 yo sits for it and finds it interesting. It has about 30 pages looking at different ships from a historical perspective, touching on ancient ships: Vikings, chinese junks, galleons, pirates, and sailing ships. More modern topics progress naturally from ships of steam, the Titanic, drydock and port, undersea research, and cutters. As a Navy family, I was a little disappointed to see only one picture of an aircraft carrier at the end and some bad facts to boot (that some carriers can carry 3000 people, um, try 5000 when the full air wing is on board!). There were no other modern war ships, but there is an interesting and colorful mix of illustrations, photos, and art. I gave it a higher rating because there really isn't a lot on the market to teach about ships to younger children and this is a great series that kids will read on their own time and time again.

My son loves this serious of books. They're very informative and written at just the right level. I would highly recommend.

Personally, to me this book is a compromise from the artistic point of view. But my son (for whom it was bought) really enjoys it, as it is small and short enough to be not as scary, as is his big transport encyclopaedia. If your child starts to be interested in ships, this might just be a good starter.
