Q: Are there batteries? If so are they safely in there? How does it hold up with teething babies?!

It came with batteries. I haven't opened the cover, which is screwed on, to see what kind they are, but they are save from baby access. No problems with teething babies or throwing babies or dropping-things-as-they-run babies; the phone is hardy and my granddaughter loves it. We have two of them for her, as it is a great travel toy (not too loud) and small enough not to increase baggage. She loves it and it's a great tool for teaching counting, amongst many other things. She loves them! We love them!

Q: would this be fun for a 1-year old?

I would say no. It is designed to be cognitively appropriate for children 18 months and older, but my 20 month old wasn't interested. If your one year old just likes sounds, this would work. If you want it to be educational, I would say pass.

Q: Is this much different from the LeapFrog remote?
