and characters we can focus on which will give us a pretty good sense of Japanese mythology
indle unlimited, usually list all the other books here and on goodreads, but just going for review this time, there are lots, on all sorts of subjects, so take a look here or on goodreads and check them all out. I've read them all {seriously, all}. Look at botttom of the long list of books, lots of mythology books {tried to separate by origin, so Celtic, Egyptian, Greek, Japanese, Norse, RomanExplore Captivating Myths of Japanese Deities, Yokai, Heroes and HeroinesThe study of mythology and folklore is a peculiar one to the extent that we are looking into things which are generally regarded as untrue yet critically important to a culture. We are also taking on the study of the “lore of the folk,” and this faces us with the question of exactly which folk we are talking about. Japan, of course, is a single nation, but its origins are so old and often so fragmented that unified mythology and folklore can be difficult to point to. Still, in all, there are some key texts, tales, and characters we can focus on which will give us a pretty good sense of Japanese mythology. In this book, you'll discover stories of mystery, horror, and romance while simultaneously learning about the Japanese culture.Within this book, you'll find the following Japanese myths and topics coveredThe Creation StoriesThe Myths of OriginsThe Journey to the UnderworldThe Wanderings of Susano-oThe Birth of Amaterasu, Trukuyumi, Susawono, and the Leech-ChildThe Story of the Comb and the CurseAmaterasu and SusanowoThe Contract of Amaterasu and SusawonoStories of the Three Most Evil Yokai of JapanStories of Helpful YokaiMy Lord Bag of RiceThe Story of Urashima TaroThe Tale of the Bamboo Cutter and Kaguya himeThe Legend of Yamato TakeruContemporary Versions of Japanese MythologyAnd more!Nikola Tesla: A Captivating Guide to the Life of a Genius InventorThe Culper Ring: A Captivating Guide to George Washington's Spy Ring and its Impact on the American RevolutionAlexander Hamilton: A Captivating Guide to one of the Founding Fathers of the United States of AmericaAaron Burr: A Captivaing Guide to the Life of Aaron Burr and the Most Famous Duel in American HistoryThe Duel: A Captivating Guide to the Lives of Alexander Hamilton and Aaron BurrWorld War 2: A Captivating Guide from Beginning to End (The Second World War and D Day Book 1)D Day: A Captivating Guide to the Battle for Normandy (The Second World War and D Day Book 2)The Second World War: A Captivating Guide to World War II and D DayWinston Churchill: A Captivating Guide to the Life of Winston S. A Basic Introduction To Japanese Myths and Folklore
As a big fan of anime and manga, I felt it was high time I took a closer look at the mythology and folklore which inspired some of the titles I've watched and read, and this book seemed like a good starting point. While not an all-encompassing encyclopedia, this book provides some good basic information. The first half briefly covers the two text that eventually formed the basis of the Shinto religion and covers some of the more iconic myths told in those text. The second half focuses more on folklore and briefly covers the legendary yokai, along with a few Japanese fairy tails. It even covers the iconic story known as The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, though the version seen in this book is nothing more than a brief summary. The one big flaw in this book though is that it contains numerous typos. While many of these typos can be overlooked, there is one glaring error in one of the earliest parts of the book that could easily confuse those doing legitimate research. In the section of Chapter 1 titled, The Wanderings of Susano-o, there's a paragraph where the name of the character, Yamata-no-Orochi is used when the author is actually talking about the character, Kushinada-hime. This little mistake caused some confusion for me and I had to reread that section two or three times before I figured out what was going on.Typographical errors aside, this book is still a good starting point for those wanting to learn more about Japanese mythology and folklore. The end of the book even has a list of websites used as the source material and can be examined for further reading. One of the websites listed is unfortunately a Wikipedia page and probably shouldn't be consulted if one is trying to do a research paper for a college class on this subject, but for the most part a lot of the websites listed look pretty solid. I took a look at the website on yokai listed and found it to be a pretty legitimate page. I've even ended up bookmarking the site in question. While not the best academic text ever written, this book is still a helpful source for those wanting to learn more about this fascinating area of mythology. It hardly has all of the answers, but it can guide readers in the direction they need to go to start looking for them.

Informative!
I bought this for my 16 yr old son that loves mythology. He said he finds it very informative and interesting!

Was A Smidge Disappointed...
The specific version I bought (did not know this before hand) was heavily edited. The illistrations of the deities, demons, etc were removed. Most of the stories were brief.. more of a summation of the myths than the actual myths.I bought this so my kids and I could read it (they are on a myths kick right now) but this fell short of our expectations.

A wonderful introduction to Japanese Mythology. I highly recommend this.
I really enjoyed this book on Japanese Mythology. I found these tales from Japan very interesting. I didn't know anything about the Myths of Japan. I would highly recommend this book who would like to learn about Japanese Myths. I found this book easy to read and understand.

Interesting content, poor editing.
Interesting small guide for getting a foothold in Japanese mythology, but the total lack of visual references and the numerous spelling mistakes / mistypings are inexusable. Book is also 10 pages shorter than listed, which is quite a lot, considering it was listed at 60.

A top notch affair for all
Enjoyed this book, the author makes no bones about the subject matter being an introduction to the many varied tales, myths & folklore of the Japanese culture and touches upon these areas as best as they can with a broad spectrum of what these stories mean to the Japanese and why it is to be taken in a much different mindset compared to our Western ideal ology. I found them to be very fun to read and it has given me a new appreciation of why some of these came about through the ages as a result of religious beliefs, the imperial family and also general folklore and the ultimate subject matter being the creation of the earth and universe and the beliefs of the many gods who played their part in shaping things to explain things have come to be today. Do yourself a favour and buy this book.

Not a good product
My mistake for purchasing this book without seeing it's page count..... this book is 80 pages and literally 25% of it is an introduction to another one of their books. DO NOT BE FOOLEDThis book should have been $10 at the most and not $17 - I really regret my purchase

Many errors and mostly advertising
The book contains an incredible amount of spelling errors, bad editing and is sourced mostly from websites. It is a very light overview of "mythology" but a quarter of the book is an excerpt from another title from the same author regarding Roman mythology. There is not much to be gained in the way of learning from this title. There are better sources out there. Don't let the cover fool you.

Interesting subject but disappointing book
This book was well written and easy to follow with some spelling errors. The content of the book was very minimal (book was thinner than expected) and only briefly covered the separate parts of its subject matter. The last Third of the book was an advertisement for another book in this series. No I would not recommend this book or its series to anyone.
