![The Blacklist - Season 05 [DVD]](https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/513BQdcGreL.jpg)

Feeling surprisingly unencumbered, Raymond Reddington (James Spader) is back, and in the process of rebuilding his criminal empire. His lust for life is ever-present as he lays the foundation for this new enterprise - one that he'll design with Elizabeth Keen (Megan Boone) by his side. Liz finds herself torn between her role as an FBI agent and the temptation to act on her more criminal instincts. In a world where the search for Blacklisters has become a family trade, Red will undoubtedly reclaim his moniker as the "Concierge of Crime." Review: Splendid as ever. - Splendid as ever. Up to it's usual standard. Spot the guest stars as usual. Review: The man comes around - Season 5 is pretty good. It starts really well with a reset for Reddingtons enterprise and watching the inventive manner in which he rebuilds his empire, is enjoyable and light hearted. The biggest criticism I have, is the ongoing subplot of Elisabeth being at odds with Reddington at every turn. Which becomes increasingly frustrating and borders on the pedantic. There is also the whole storyline about the bones in the bag, which I can't lie, I found far less engaging than I suspect I was meant to. It's a good season, with some strong storylines, great characters that despite those, above mentioned shortcomings, is well worth watching and enjoyable.

Brilliant show
Every season of The Blacklist has had me riveted, mainly by the ensemble of believable actors and James Spader's outstanding ability to give a range of tenderness to cold blooded killing. The writers have drawn each character so well as they each develop through every season - I feel like doing a PhD on this series! Am on my second turn through from season 1 to the CGI ending one where COVID interrupted production. That PhD may simply have to be developed!

Rapid response and fast delivery Next day in fact
This show is top notch and with all the twists and turns really does leave you wondering what ' Red' ( Raymond Redington played by the wonderful James Spader ) will do next. Everybody waits for Red to speak because when he speaks everyone but everyone listens with baited breath. Elizabeth (played by the lovely Megan Boone) is the instrument by whom Red uses to initially make the team aware of yet another 'Blacklister' - then everything unravels from this.

PREPOSTEROUS MOST CERTAINLY, BUT ENTERTAININGLY SO
As ever, dodgy ethics abound - the FBI special squad granting master criminal Raymond Reddington immunity in return for the capture of notorious villains. (Try keeping account of all Reddington's killings in the twenty two episodes, police turning a blind eye. Surely this should not be.) Season 5 comprises a mixture of fun episodes (ingeniously plotted scams, the first within minutes) and some most decidedly dark. Increasingly dominant is an elusive duffel bag containing bones. Why so sought after, what the big secret? Reddington seems determined to risk everything to prevent Elizabeth his daughter (or is she?) finding out. Some may feel this storyline unconvincing and, even worse, a bore - a scriptwriers' contrivance that alienates. James Spader remains the main reason to watch. His Reddington is hardly one to admire - brimming over with self-esteem, callously manipulating and so free with his gun. (His desire to aid police get rid of major criminals is not to help justice but to remove villains who represent a threat to him.) Superb acting renders the character more palatable - as do unexpected insights. Example? His dependence on trusted loyal aide Dembe - his "light in darkness", the conscience he so badly needs. An uneven series. At its best (which is often) brilliant. That duffel bag, though, sets everything off balance - Elizabeth's resulting motivation leading to actions that do not convince.

Must watch!
Having watched the first four series, I am eagerly looking forward to watching this one (the fifth), but I will need to pace myself because I tend to sit down and watch one episode after the other and suddenly it’s the early hours of the morning! 💤 Hopefully as gripping and entertaining as the first four series!
