Goes on more like paint than stain
Used 12 gallons of this stain on our house last year. Love the color but it did need 2 coats and it does go on like paint. I believe I read either from the Cabot site or another reviewer that it lasts up to 5 years. Well this is year 2 and so far so good. I would definitely recommend this product and will use again, hopefully in another 3+ years.

It's not as good as the original oil based product that Cabot made
Since Cabot no longer makes the oil based version of this I tried a gallon of this acrylic version. First the good news is that it is an exact color match for the old product. The not as good news is that it is a heavier coating and thus makes the shingles look more like they have been painted than stained. It's not as heavy as a regular outdoor acrylic paint (like a decking stain) but it is heavy enough to bridge the gaps between tightly spaced shingles thus erasing the gap and you will lose some of the shingle's texture as this fills that in a bit. That results in a somewhat odd look in those places. Now that said, if you have existing shingles that were finished with Cabot's bleaching oil, and you want a newly stained look this is about the only way to go. Oil stains are a dying breed thanks the VOC rules and even an oil based stain (that you can get today) is thicker than the old bleaching oil (it tried several, never could get a good color match and they all left more sheen on the shingles that the new Cabot acrylic). I have no idea if the new acrylic will really bleach the shingles like the old oil product did as it is too early to tell but I do not have a lot of hope that it will do that. Anyway, this is, I think, the best thing you can get right now as a replacement but I sure wish they had discontinued the oil based version.

A fix for botchy, green patch and sticky undried stain on decks
First off if you have not used this (semi-solid) stain by Cabot's then don't! As a stain it sucks. Cabot's solid and transparent stains are good. To be fair I find all stains to be difficult to work with and all fall in the middle of the rating scale. Now if you have used this stain and your deck looks like crap or is sticky, green spot's, inconsistent other then the natural color of the wood showing through it can be fixed without stripping or sanding it all off. Bad part is it will cost more money. So to fix this mess, through out the instructions and buy some weenie rollers, halfway nice brushes and of course more stain. That's right more stain. So lighly sand the surface then blow off the dust with air. Don't wipe! Now roll on a coat one board at a time. Go slowly as the roller tends to foam the stain. If this happens just reroll until you have a consistent amount of stain on the board. Next use a brush and lightly go over the rolled on stain. With each coat you apply the finish will turn out like a solid stained deck. I found three coats worked the best and I have had no peeling,no sticky finish and is durable. Notes: let the coats dry for 24 hrs before you apply the next coat. Sanding in between coats is a must. You up want to just kinda scuff the surface. Wait at least two days before you use the deck. Start your staining after the dew is gone in the morning. If the stain get wet before drying just wait till it does dry out and try again. This stain is a solid stain with less pigment. One good note is it will take less stain the first coating.

Beautiful natural tone.
My lake neighbor used this on his log cabin it has been a few years and still looks like new. I like the natural color so much I will use on our new deck. Waiting on our deck to cure out.

It doesn't get any better than the best
Cabot stain is simply the best stain on the market. Agree, it's pricey but WOW this product is far superior than anything I've used in the past. Love how the grain of the wood becomes more noticeable and if you take the time to add a second coat, you'll find yourself staring at your work of art. Our neighbors are envious of our deck since staining it with Cabot's.

Product covers well
I love the product. I had bought from another place my first can. Covers well. Only problem was delivery with no fault of Amazon. Was another carrier. But can was smashed. Amazon was good enough to refund me for this.

The product is great but buy it from someone else
It was way over priced! I can buy a Gallon for $50.99 Canadian (Not a quart for $77 Canadian) My mistake! I went by the pictures and the quarts are the same size as the gallons. The product is great but buy it from someone else, who is not ripping you off..
