Can't believe this is the author's first book!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I loved the way the story and characters unfolded. I love character based books so I liked that we got to visit different key players across the chapters and then discover how their worlds overlapped. I found the writing created such a rich image, without spending pages describing settings and people (which is a pet hate of mine), it was just the right level of detail. I found myself swept away. It was easy reading whilst still having interesting and important themes around culture, climate change and relationships.

An enjoyable episodic tale
I bought this short novel after seeing the author recommended for fans of Becky Chambers. It’s not quite in the same space I don’t feel, but close enough that I still found myself enjoying it, particularly as I got more and more invested in the character and the world. It is a book about climate change, to some extent, and so I had some trepidation at the start because the setting felt like it was going to be depressing. I think though that there is a narrative filled with hope despite the setting, which eventually comes to balance it out.Although presented as a novella, it actually feels more like a sequence of short stories which are, in turn, sequels or prequels to one another, following the same character. That is to say, each chapter contains a fairly distinct episode in the character’s journey. This makes for a very readable structure.I’ve added Curtis to my read list and will be looking out to buy her next novel soon.

Good debut
I really enjoyed the writing style and the way the story moves through multiple pov's without being confusing in any way. The depth of characterisation given in a short time is impressive and immersive. The plot was good but felt a tad cramped towards the end. Really liked the dark undertone throughout. Having read Floating Hotel before this, which I loved, I'll definitely be looking out for further works from this author as the end pacing and reveals was much better. Definitely worth a read.

I couldn't put this book down. It was imaginative and very funny. I hope that the author has more in the pipeline.

Fast-paced sci-fi set in a unique neo-Western world
Frontier is a fast-paced and vibrant sci-fi story with plenty of humour and light to balance out the darker aspects of the world. It took me a while to adjust to the style of this book, but once I did, I really enjoyed the ride.We follow an unnamed (at least at the start) character through a future Earth that has become a sun-bleached wild west of analogue outlaws. She is on a quest to find her missing love, and as she journeys through the crumbling remains of a shattered society, she discovers the different ways people manage to scrape a living on the barren planet. The story is told like a series of vignettes, and it can feel a little disjointed and hard to follow as the main character is unnamed and the third-person perspective jumps around a lot. It's also a relatively short story, and there were some parts that I wish were fleshed out a bit more (particularly the part around the Throat) as it was sometimes confusing as to what was going on or how the environment was arranged.Still, every character, no matter how brief their appearance, is distinctive and interesting. Grace Curtis really excels at giving her characters depth in the shortest amount of space, and I would happily follow any of them into a spin-off story. I also really enjoyed the creative worldbuilding and the vivid descriptions that really suck you into every scene. I was never bored at any point, and the writing style had a compelling immediacy that kept me turning the pages right up to the surprisingly hopeful conclusion. I'd recommend it for anyone who's looking for a fast-paced SFF read with queer characters, a pacifist heroine, and a unique world.Thank you to the publisher for providing an ARC via Netgalley.

easy SCI-FI Adventure
I like the character building and the world the author created. Just disliked the story alittle bit and it jumped around too much for my liking. But an easy read and enjoyable.

Wholesome SF
This story follows a traveller, a soldier that has landed on a hostile Earth, looking for the woman she loves. The Earth has been ravaged by climate change, and it has hardened not just the planet, but its people, who have grown distrusting of strangers. As the story unfolds we learn more about this stranger, her history, feelings and motivations, as well as what has befallen the planet. It's a wonderful mix of SF, love story and western.I felt that the story slowed down and meandered a little in the middle, but otherwise the pacing was good and it certainly picked up again as it moved towards a satisfying ending. I'm grateful to have been given a copy of this by the publisher and NetGalley, and I look forward to seeing what Grace Curtis has in store for us in the future.
