When did this become a cooperative game?

This is NOT a cooperative game, it is definitely a competitive game. The description (and Roger's answer) are using that term incorrectly.

How replayable is this game?

This game is completely replayable assuming you have the time and the players! Not sure what the answer about 'the killer' and 'the invitations' is about, it must be a different game, diplomacy has neither thing in it. This game is so replayable it even has conventions!

what is the differance between this version and the $42 version?

The two versions look the same based on the pictures of the more expensive one except for the three dimensional army and navy pieces. The more expensive one is published by Renegade Game Studio rather than Hasbro. Go with the cheaper one! It's also Amazon's Choice!

When did this become a cooperative game?

We could probably argue the definition of "cooperative" as it applies to games forever. But the owner of the Diplomacy Board Game lists it on Amazon as "Hasbro Gaming Avalon Hill Diplomacy Cooperative Board Game, European Political Themed Strategy Game, Ages 12 and Up, 2-7 Players." I guess not everyone has to be on the same team for the whole game to be cooperative.
