Mine does exact same thing when we have a heavy frost. I made a extended hood that goes around reflector . It helps 98% of the time . I plan on creating some type of heat strip eventually. You would think it would have a better design.

Q: Can one sensor protect both the open and close motion, or are two sensors required?

You will need a sensor on each side of the gate.. one for “open” and one for “closed”.
