Laurie Lee The Firstborn Hardcover – February 24, 2014

Have twice now bought two copies of this book as presents for new fathers, as we have an original edition  The Firstborn . However, we returned the first two copies as this edition doesn't have the lovely photographs from the original edition, which really made the book so special. We then decided we'd re-order, accepting no photos as the text itself was, in our memories, so poignant. We've now returned the second two copies as we discovered on closer reading that this new edition has an extra chapter ]written by Laurie Lee when his daughter was a few months old. When we read this, and then re-read the original, we realised that, although beautifully written by a craftsman author, the sentiments are not in our view entirely appropriate for the modern parent - nor even for us (in our 60s and 70s, and grandparents). We are reading this now with contemporary sensibilities, and it just doesn't make it. The Firstborn

Had a copy 40 years ago when my daughter was borne and am thrilled it is back in print as I have given it as a gift to so many new Mums and Dads it is so wonderful full of the emotions one feels when becoming a new parent.

Such a beautiful book. Had it myself years ago but recently gave as a gift to a new mum. Just as special now as then.
