These handkerchiefs are very pretty, and the colors are cheerful. If the handkerchiefs are just for you, it's obviously your decision. If they are to be distributed to a group, it might then depend on whether the funeral in question will be a traditional, somber one or one that is a celebration of life. Hope that helps.

Is this large enough to wear as a bandana?

No, semi-transparent woven cotton. Hankies are lovely, soft pastel colors, and a have soft hand (or feel) after washing. READ my other review for more info on this item.

The description says 17x17. Someone answered 12x12. What is the actual size?

Hello. I hope this helps: My set of three handkerchiefs measure closer to the 17x17 inch size, but each varies by about 1/4 to 1/2 inch. Mine have already been cold water washed in a mesh lingerie bag, gently tugged by hand to smooth wrinkles, and line dryed. No need to iron. The fabric softened after washing and the colors did not fade. They are very pretty soft pastels and are much larger than those tiny embroidered little old lady hankies we have all inherited.
