Did you make sure to rosin the bow? You have to break the rosin up first with a key or knife, just until it cracks/ chips. Then run the bow over the rosin for a good long time. The rosin should be applied heavily enough so that it leaves a residue on the strings. After she is finished playing, take a cloth and run it over the strings to remove residue before putting away. If your fingers on the left hand can only touch the scroll, it means the violin is a bit large for you. If your left wrist can touch the scroll, it means the violin is a bit small for you.

I bought this for my daughter and she is in 7th, first year violin student. So yes I think that she could since she is a beginner. Although I did not know how to tune it and I asked her instructor if she could assist. She did but had to take it to a instrument store to have some addition added or something fixed. It was only $25.00 though. All in all good for practice.
