A classic! A great Halloween movie, or really anytime movie for the whole family! Sandra and Nicole are amazing but of course we all love the Midnight Margaritas!

Practical Magic is a delightful blend of fantasy, family drama, and romance. One of my favorite movies. Recently had surgery and couldn’t find my dvd so rented on Amazon video. Price was appropriate. All the actors are some of my favorite talents to watch. If you need a light hearted fun way to distract from aches and pains this is a fun movie to watch. Just wish I could have a midnight margarita too! 😁

This movie not only has 2 very talented female actors Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock, but this movie is not so much about the workings of doing magic, it has plenty of magic in it, but ths movie more shows the harm that magic can do and the long term affects one spell you cast can do. If you're looking for a movie that might help you learn how to do magic or how it's done, then this is not the movie, it shows very little about actually the full set-up of using spells, but it is very funny and also has its sad moments. Bullock and Kidman are sisters in this movie who go to live with their Aunt's because their parents die, their Aunt's end up teaching them magic and once the sisters grow into teenagers/young adults Kidman runs off from her home town following love and men and living a more on the road life and Bullock stays with the Aunt's, well the town they live in is small and her Aunt's are accused of being Witche's and the community acts scared of them, but they aren't harmful witche's and they just go about the market and through the town as if it is entertaining that people act the way they do towards them, Bullock whose a young adult gets noticed by another young man who works in the town who fancies her and the Aunt's cast a spell to attract the man and Bullock in a relationship of puppy love, like all spells there are consequences sometimes and the Aunt's didn't think the long term downside of the spell would ever be a problem, but I can't tell you what that is because you'll have to watch it yourself. The movie is not all about Bullock, Kidman stays in touch with her sister and they end up re-united and she has problems of her own which add another twist and exciting part to the movie. I really enjoyed this movie, the reason I gave it 4 stars is because it was a little cheesy, but it was meant to be comedy and even if you're not a believer of magic, this movie is still funny and it's not got a whole lot of magical parts in it, so if you're someone who is strong beliver of magic is wrong or doesn't exist this movie definitly does not make magic seem like it is real at all, it maintains the make belive magic element in the movie. It is more of a film for women to watch, but it is very funny and I enjoy watching it and watch it often if I want a good funny movie.

Film méconnu, cette comédie romantique a pourtant bien des qualités. Dès le début, les personnages sont présentés en quelques minutes, leur origine et leurs caractères sont bien campés. On sent que quelque chose cloche sans savoir pourquoi, et au détours d’un dialogue, la réponse est amenée, satisfaisant notre curiosité. Il est question de sorcières vivant dans un petit village où tout le monde se connait. L’histoire met en scène deux sœurs, Sally et Gillian Owens. Elevées dans leur demeure, par leurs deux tantes Frances et Jet, après la mort de leurs parents, elles se révèlent très différentes. Tandis que Sally est réservée, Gillian a un tempérament plutôt excentrique. Héritières de leurs ancêtres sorcières, une malédiction plane sur elles : l’homme dont chacune tombera amoureuse sera condamné à une mort prématurée. Malgré cela, chacune oriente sa vie. Sally rencontre Michael et se marie avec lui, tandis que Gillian, qui a quitté la maison familiale, rencontre Jimmy Angelov, un homme sombre et mystérieux. Mais la vie des deux sœurs va radicalement changer. Teinté d’une touche fantastique, le métrage est avant tout basé sur la psychologie des personnages et leurs réactions, plus que sur l’action pure. Aussi, si vous recherchez les effets spéciaux et les scènes de magie très spectaculaires, avec des séquences surnaturelles à fond, alors, passez votre chemin, car ce film n’est pas pour vous. Le scénario est de qualité, le rythme est plutôt bon et on suit avec plaisir les aventures et surtout les mésaventures qui arrivent aux héroïnes, le tout saupoudré d’un brin de magie, car il en faut bien, mais de façon parcimonieuse, de manière à ce que l’histoire prenne le dessus sur le côté spectacle. Aidé par un casting quatre étoiles, à commencer par le duo star féminin, qui domine l’ensemble. Sandra BULLOCK est parfaite dans son interprétation de Sally. Réservée et réfléchie, elle cherche avant tout à mener une vie normale, sans la magie. Mais ses plans ne vont pas se passer comme prévus. L’actrice arrive une fois de plus à rendre son rôle crédible, toujours étonnante dans ses compositions, elle prouve à nouveau qu’elle est l’une des meilleures actrices actuelles, pouvant tout jouer. Nicole KIDMAN est surprenante dans son rôle de Gillian. L’exacte opposée de sa sœur, démonstrative et frivole, elle prend la vie au jour le jour, sans trop se poser de questions et n’hésite pas à se servir de la magie, si le besoin s’en fait ressentir. L’actrice rend une performance à la mesure de son talent, légère et pétillante, drôle et très charismatique. A l’époque star en devenir, elle prouvera plusieurs années plus tard, qu’elle est l’une des meilleures actrices de sa génération, en cumulant les rôles diversifiés et complexes. Stockard CHANNING et Dianne WIEST sont tous simplement extraordinaires dans leurs rôles de tantes extravagantes : Frances et Jet. Elles amènent un niveau de drôlerie et de complicité rarement égalés. Les deux actrices jouent ces personnalités complémentaires avec un ton très juste, sans en faire trop. Excellents seconds rôles. Dommage qu’on ne les voit pas assez. Goran VISNJIC et Aidan QUINN interprètent avec brio leur personnage respectif, le premier est Jimmy Angelov, menaçant, jaloux et abusif, il va perturber la vie des deux sœurs, surtout Gillian, qui sera en grand danger ; le deuxième se nomme Gary Hallett, enquêteur, il mène une investigation sur Jimmy qu’il soupçonne de très graves méfaits, il va entrer en contact avec les sœurs Owens afin d’en savoir plus, ce qui en ressortira sera une surprise, surtout pour Sally. Les deux acteurs sont impeccables dans leur personnification de rôle complétement opposé, le premier sait se rendre inquiétant, le deuxième sait jouer de son charme et sa décontraction. Côté technique, ma critique portera sur l’édition BR import Espagnol, puisque l’équivalent Français n’existe malheureusement pas. D’abord, le disque inséré marche très bien sur n’importe quel lecteur BR français, le menu affiché est en Anglais, mais on s’y retrouve très bien. Il y a la vraie Version Française, et ceux qui souhaitent le regarder en Version Originale le peuvent aussi, puisque les sous-titres Français sont également présents. La VF est très correcte, mais j’ai une petite préférence pour la VOST, plus riche et plus précise. A chacun de faire le choix qui lui correspond le mieux. L’image est magnifique, digne du support HD. Les couleurs sont belles et éclatantes, elles ressortent très bien. Le son est très net et bénéficie d’une belle précision. D’ailleurs, il y a une très bonne BO Pop/Rock qui accompagne le film, très bien mise en valeur. A noter que le réalisateur de ce métrage, sorti en salles en 1998, n’est autre que Griffin DUNNE, acteur que l’on retrouve à de maintes fois dans des films comme « After Hours » ou « Broken City ». Film vraiment génial, qui fait du bien. Enchanteur à plus d’un titre. A voir et à revoir.
