is this a reliable tool for polishing stainless steel appliances and polishing wood furniture. for these tasks what is the battery life on a full chg

it has 2 settings . settings 1 is 2800rpm max use this setting always . setting 2 is to fast and will cause burns on clear coat and burn up sand paper . the smaller batteries don't last long maybe 10 - 15 minutes at full speed. The bigger batteries last about 40 minutes . I use this tool for repairing curb damage on car rims .

why not just use the ryobi drill w special attachment for the polishing pads?

The drill doesn't have enough rpms to get the job done. Also at lower tpms sanding disks have a tendency to dig in to one spot and cause the drill to kick back.

What is the weight with the battery attached?

I think it's around couple of pounds w/o battery. It is very compact. You may use different batteries which differ in weight.
