Innovative quality product by Thule
I bought this to attach to my sedan prior to making the trip from Texas to Alaska on the ALCAN. This served me without issue on the ~5000mi trip and allowed me to nearly double my trunk space.I had to get uhaul to attach the hitch and wiring to my car but after that assembly and attachment of this carrier was very easy, about 30mins. Once attached, it seems to be stable even at higher speeds and I didn't notice that my car handled differently. Unlike roof racks and roof-mounted cargo boxes, this did not noticeably affect my gas mileage. It fits into both 1.25 and 2in receivers. It opens like a clam and stores maybe two large suitcases. I was able to pack two "carry-on" sized suitcases, an inflatable mattress, sheet set, pillow, a nylon tool bag and a large hiking backpack inside with a small amount of room to spare. One issue with my car was that my sedan is low to the ground and the carrier extended about 2 feet from my hitch. There was some scraping of the metal frame on the road when I went up steep inclines or entered some irregular driveways. Not a huge problem as this didn't damage the integrity of the carrier's frame and I doubt it would be a problem with trucks, vans or higher sedans.I would recommend buying some reflective hazard tape and putting it on the sides and the top lid of this carrier (eye level) to make it easier to see as this protrudes quite a bit from the back of the car and the taillights are closer to the bottom. I would also recommend getting two locking pins to secure this to your hitch. I used 1/4in diameter pins; one to secure the metal frame to itself (it comes in two parts) and then the frame to the hitch. It's heavy when loaded but would make a nice steal for a motivated crook with a pickup truck.Overall a nice quality product that fit my needs perfectly.

Very Functional!
I bought this about 6 months ago and have used it on 3 long trips attached to a 2015 Toyota Highlander. We are very pleased with this cargo carrier. We bought this to replace a larger roof top carrier that still works, but might never use again. This item makes loading and unloading so much easier. On every 1 of the 3 trips I have been asked by several travelers at rest stops and gas stations about it. It seems everyone is familiar with the various rooftop options and also the "open-tray" hitch mount options, but few folks have seen the enclosed hitch mount options like this one. I've only ever seen 1 of these on the road. I've seen larger ones attached to RVs, but when I investigated them they were $2800 - crazy if you ask me.Pros:Very easy to load and unload (my wife was never comfortable loading or unloading the roof top carrier on our Suburban)Holds quite a bit of cargo - though not as much as the larger roof top carriersIncludes brake lights (you'll need a "towing equipped vehicle" for the brake lights to work) and a license plate holderFairly easy to assembleBig Bonus - The rear hatch on the Highlander opens with this installed -- That was lucky, but the unit does tilt down if the hatch won't clear itCons:It takes 2 people to insert into the receiver (I've put the larger roof top carriers on by myself)The price is fairly steep - more than 2x the Sears roof top carrier that is larger and seems to be made of the same materialNot really a con, but not as "well made/high quality" as the Thule or Yakima roof mounted cargo boxes -- but those are considerably more expense than the very functional Sears Xcargo models.

Just as advertised
The price was right and like other reviewers wish Thule could have included some sort of locking feature to lock it to my hitch. I was also not satisfied with the length of bolt provided (might be OK without the 2" adapter - which came pre-installed which tells me most people must use this box with a 2" receiver) to attach it to my hitch so went to my local Home Depot and bought the longest one they had that would fit, along with another flat washer, locking washer, and a nut. Used a box wrench to tighten everything down. I just took it on an 1800 mile trip and it was as solid at the end as it was in the beginning (and that includes bottoming it out on a couple of driveways). As to the box itself, I could not tell from the Amazon description whether it came with the lighted license plate holder or not. It did. Assembly was pretty straight forward, although I admit there were a couple of times I wished for Ikea type simplified instruction.I never did use the feature that tilts it as I had enough room to open the tailgate (2011 Outback) without using it. Instructions say to unload the box before using this feature - which would have been a royal pain - so I was glad it was not needed. There is also the issue of not being able to remove the key unless the box is closed and locked. A pain in the beginning, but after shutting the lid, thinking it was closed and not being able to lock it because it was not as shut as I though made me decide this feature was OK after all.One final note. Because this was a large item, I had to pay extra for shipping ($50 + tax) but that was pretty reasonable compared to some sellers. Because I had to pay for shipping, I was given a guaranteed delivery date. It was late. Called customer service and they immediately, without hesitation, refunded the shipping and tax to my credit card. All around, a good experience with the product (Thule 635C Transporter) and with Amazon.Update 13MAY18: I still have this and have used it on 3 vehicles. Everything I originally said about this product is still correct. The reason for this update is to specify that I originally used it on a 2011 Outback (stated in the original review), then on a C-class RV, and am currently using it on a 2017 RAV4. On the Outback I did not need to use the tilt down feature; on the RV it allowed me to open one of the storage compartment doors just a bit more; and on the RAV the feature is a must to allow the back hatch to open. Because of the dragging I noted in the original review I would hesitate to use it on, say, a sedan. On the higher clearance vehicles it is not a huge problem but I suspect it would be on a lower riding sedan. One last item of note. On the most recent use, I drove through torrential downpours. No water got inside.

Bracket was not in box, so we sent it back!
Might be a decent item but my review must be based upon what was recieved, and this item is not worth a nickel if you cant mount it to the vehicle. The bracket was not with the item, it was picked up 2 weeks ago and no refund as of this writing!

Successful for lighter bulky items on Mazda 3
I have this installed on my Mazda 3 hatchback. Used it for a full summer and 5000 km across country and back, allowed us to camp most of the way. We used it for bulky light items - careful not to exceed the overall weight capacity of the hitch (200 lbs). The box is 80 lbs which left us about 100 lbs to work with, but it worked well for us. One hitch installer told us our frame is not rated for this hitch, but no trouble so far.
