The top hat, invented in 1797 by a man named John Hetherington, created great controversy and chaos in the streets of London the first time it was worn in public by the man himself. The top hats were not popular until the early 1800's and then they became a status symbol for men of business and high society. This elegant top hat has a slight flair in the top of its 6 1/2" crown and a 2 1/2" grosgrain hatband at the base. The 2 1/2" gently curled brim is bound with 5/8" grosgrain trim. The star of the night!
Don’t mind my love for top hats! I wish everyone wear them and enjoy them as much as I do. This particular one is amazing, tall and very well made. Order your usual hat size: fits exactly
This is the John Bull theatrical top hat, but it could be worn for dress. The lining is minimal so that it can be worn under hot stage lights, and the outside is just a model of perfection. Temporarily I decorated the hat with a red Petersham (ribbon) hatband and wet-felted holly leaves and berries. I presented it to my husband to wear for his role in an adaptation of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" at our local theater. He was thrilled! It fits as though it's bespoke: I ordered the XL and the XXL and let him try them both. One was a little under 24" and the other was a little over 24". Thankfully, it was easy to send back the XXL, as the XL fit perfectly. A good top hat could easily cost hundreds of dollars, but this one is modestly priced (at this time) at a little under $80. Buy this! It's a great costume or dress piece.

Quality hat
I was surprised at the quality of the hat. I read the reviews before I bought it and they were correct. The fit is accurate. I am on the 7 1/4 size of the 7 1/4 - 7 3/8 so I had to put a little paper towel in the bad to tighten it up. It will be great for Halloween and Christmas.

Nice costume hat
Well made costume hat. If you are looking for a victorian style hat for every day use, the construction is a little light. But for occasional costume use it is fine, lightweight, but breathable. XL fit my 7 5/8 head perfectly as advertised.

Timeless !!
These hats are tough ! The box it arrived in was beat to death, yet the hat was unscathed !! This is my 3rd hat from Hats in the Belfry....it won't be my last. Quality construction and materials. You'll be transported to another time. I only had a t-shirt on and this top hat made me want to get dressed up. Worth every penny.
