The C Ne 50 is what the weight of the thread is. The number will change depending on what that weight is. So if your spool says C Ne 50 it is 50 weight thread, if it's C Ne 30 or 40 then it's 30 or 40 weight thread. It is a single ply. It is a sewing thread suitable for machine sewing or hand sewing either one.

what's the staple length of the cotton in this thread?

They don't usually tell you on thread. (For the uninitiated; staple is the length of the fiber. At best a label will say long staple, which makes a smoother thread or yarn. It is softer and more durable. Polyester is, by nature, a long staple fiber hence it's smoothness. The same with rayon (artificially lengthened cellulose fiber) embroidery threads. This helps them be shiny and soft, though due to the thinness of the fibers they are weak.

What is the thread size for the Gutermann threads? I am looking to adjust some dress shirts with my sewing machine.

The Spool states: 800m - 876 yds which is the length, and this: C NE 50Could that be a needle size? Haven't used mine yet
