Does this trap really work to kill rats? What bait is best to use?

I wouldn't say it's the trap that kills rodents, it's the bait you use to kill them. This trap just funnels the rats toward the bait while keeping other animals, like dogs, away from the poison. As for what I'd suggest, while your mileage may vary, I got rid of a rat infestation with the following bait in less than a week. How large is the opening?

Large enough for a large rat but too small for a grown cat or dog. Not good for small dogs and kittens. Bait (Peanutbutter based) is way inside so I think it is 95% pet safe.

Will this work for squirrels?

We don't recommend using this product for squirrels. It is only labeled for rats and mice.

Have the trap but did not have any bait, what kind of bait do I buy?

Neogen's 000550 Rodent Bait Station does not come with bait. We recommend using with Ramik Mini bars, Havoc blocks, Di-Kill blocks or CyKill blocks.
