Take Notes!
The book, Ultimate Guide to Building a Soap Making Business Empire, By Ally Russell, is a step-by-step guide for how to create and maintain this business in an expert manner. There are beautiful photos that are inviting, and this even sounds weird, but the photos are so inviting, concerning the soap, the soap looks delicious enough to eat. The author’s voice is fun and friendly. She wants the reader to understand that what she really means is that this is a book about creating a soap empire business to creating a friendly business just to sell to friends and local patrons. Okay, so the intro lines up the ways to “building this empire” that you can also turn into a smaller-scale business. With both she reassures the reader that you don’t have to have any experience in either making soaps or knowing how to set up a business. My sense, from reading the book, is that you just have to have a desire and excitement. One way to get you excited or emphasize your excitement is for you to brainstorm ideas and keep them in a journal. My favorite section, as always, is the history, in this case of soap. She says, “The earliest recorded evidence of the creation and use of soap goes back to around 2800 BC in ancient Babylon. Then she follows through how the history of the soap gets us to the present! She shows us the detailed list of ingredients you can use, like the fun, lavender and oils. She asserts that you can have more commercial ingredients to those that make the soap have a more homemade feel. In my opinion the fragrances are the best! In terms of a workspace, at home like in the backyard, she offers us details for things like ventilation, lighting, products, storage, etc. You can recognize the tools in the pictures she offers. She even writes about the clothes you should wear and the difference between “fluffy lather” and soaps that don’t have “fluffy lather.” For example, there are “hard soaps” and “soft soaps.” She shows us fun molds, recipes, the cold process of making soap and the hot process. Keep notes she says, keep notes!

Comprehensive and Helpful
The author covers all aspects of not just the "how to" of soap-making but of marketing the finished product as well. It is so packed with information that I found something on every page that was relevant and interesting. In discussing ingredients, she refers to issues relating to human health, safety, and the environmental implications of harvesting particular ones. The history of soap-making is given as well, along with her own reasons for taking up the vocation. I enjoyed the casual tone, but did not find the writing sloppy or full of grammatical errors. As a not very business-minded person, I really appreciated the business/marketing advice. It won't just apply to soap-making but to the marketing of other products/services as well. The book was a worthwhile purchase, and I plan to keep it handy!

Great guide for new soap makers!
Right now I’m a hobbyist soap maker but I’m seriously considering making it a business but what was stopping me is all the formal things like like getting permits and other requirements to start a serious business venture. This book eased my mind by explaining everything to me in a direct but simple manner. I greatly recommend this book to anyone that wants to take a step forward from making their hobby a source of income and finally their mainly source of income. Greatly written and with lots of info that won’t leave your brain feeling scrambled.
