I expect this to last a long time
I had an Oster toaster that lasted only 3 years, but I had an Cuisinart coffee maker that lasted 7 years, so I bought this Cuisinart toaster thinking it will last longer than the Oster. I'm betting this Cuisinart toaster will last longer. As for the toaster, I used it once so far, and it works like a toaster should and seems to perform its job well. It can handle a bagel and the muffin I made popped out, so I can get it out without any problems. It says it has a small footprint, however, it seems to be a regular sized toaster to me. I like it so far.

Toast
Just got it, it toasts good like the white shell which stays cool to touch.

I'm not sure Cuisinart knows what "compact" means
Look at the photo. On the right, my dearly beloved, permanently stained, old toaster, which finally gave up the ghost. On the left, Cuisinart's "compact" toaster. It's big. It's also a very bright white---to the point that it manages to stand out as stupidly, garishly white next to white canisters and against a white backsplash.I returned it, so I can't speak to the quality of the job it does. I can say that the cord was on the short side. I did like that it has a dedicated "cancel" button. That's a feature I greatly appreciated on my old toaster and one of the reasons I bought this one.

Disappointed
Compared to other Cuisinart toasters I have had in the past, I was extremely disappointed with the Cuisinart 2 slice toaster CPT-122BK model. Not sure if I just got a defective one or if they are all like that, but it didn't work correctly. The toaster itself is very lightweight & low quality compared to the others I have had. It looks good & the cord is a good length & can be contained underneath. I definitely recommend a removable crumb tray & it has one. It was packaged well & I had it delivered in an Amazon box. I like the cancel, bagel & defrost options & the wide slots - unfortunately, that's the only good things about it as it didn't toast as it should.I ran a couple cycles to burn off the manufacturing residue & tested the toaster with several different types/sizes/thickness of bread at the various heat settings - all had issues. Weirdly, the pieces of toast that I scraped off the burnt parts tasted like there was cinnamon on it & I was using Texas toast & peanut butter, so there shouldn't have been a cinnamon taste. The bread was still cold even though it was burnt. It appeared brand new in the box with all of the wrappings & no crumbs in it when I unboxed it, so I don't know what happened. The plastic sides of the toaster got very hot, even on the lowest setting. The lever isn't smoothe when you press it down & you can see the red heat elements through the lever slit in the plastic. Thicker bread doesn't pop up very much when it's done. The bread carriage doesn't hold the bread in the center of the slots & it didn't settle in the same spot every time.Toasting at level 1 or 2 doesn't get the bread toasted or warm. Level 2.5 - 3.5 burns one side of the bread while the other side isn't toasted at all. Turning it over to toast the other side ends up burning both sides. Anything higher makes charcoal. There's no control at all over the toast brownness because it goes from nothing to burnt in less than 1 level. Weirdly, even when the toast was burnt, the bread wasn't warm at all. The heat elements get really red & all seem to light up, but I don't know what makes the toaster do what it does at the lower heat levels. If you like burnt cold toast, you would probably like this defective toaster.I need to have a toaster that works correctly & consistently since we use it every day for multiple people & picky eaters.Thankfully, I am able to return the toaster without leaving my house - the UPS building is about 10 miles away from my house & I don't have a vehicle right now & we don't really have any public transportation options here. UPS will pick it up at some point tomorrow & being a label to put on it. Hopefully that goes smoothly! I have already ordered a different brand toaster that has 4.7 stars - hopefully I get one that actually works well, every time.

Great product for the money!
Excellent toaster at a great price! Aside from the four selectable features, I especially like the easily removeable bread curmb drawer in the back of the toaster. There is no need to turn it upside down to empty out the crumbs.

Customer Service Still Lives
I bought this on a Wirecutter recommendation and a coupon in October 2022. I never used it a lot but since the beginning it really only toasted one side but because the rye bread I eat never quite fit so to make sure all ends were toasted I’d just flip and rotate the bread to get all surfaces. Today, 2.242024 the toaster broke down and the catch to hold the bread in place no longer does that, when pressed down the toast pops back up as soon as the presser is let go. Over the last month there were signs when I had to try 3-4 times before the lever caught. Another example of a once hardy, well engineered long lasting Cuisinart product failing on all levels. My last toaster and toaster oven seemed to last decades with constant use, this product died after less than three years of sporadic use.I contacted Cuisinart via email given by customer support, provided an invoice showing the purchase date, and they are sending me a replacement.

A NICE TOASTER
THIS IS A REALLY NICE TOASTER FOR THE MONEY! YOU CAN'T BEAT THE PRICE! IT'S A LOT LIGHTER THAN MY EXPENSIVE TOASTER WAS. I CAN'T DO LIFT HEAVY APPLIANCES ANYMORE. THIS TOASTER HAS THREE SETTINGS, BAGEL, FROZEN AND REHEAT. MY OLD TOASTER DIDN'T HAVE THE LIFT LEVER. YOU PRESSED A SETTING ON THE TOASTER TO LIFT YOUR TOAST AND THAT SETTING WAS WHAT WENT OUT ON IT. I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED CUISINART SO I FELT I COULDN'T GO WRONG. REALLY PLEASED WITH THIS TOASTER...ESPECIALLY THE PRICE!

Disappointment
It's a toaster. It toasts bread. If that's all you want, this will do the job.I like bagels, and I value even toasting. That's where this toaster loses me. First, it toasts both sides of a bagel instead of just the insides. This makes the outside of the bagel less soft and changes the flavor of any seeds or nuts on the surface of the bagel. I'm not sure what difference there is between having the bagel button on or off, but it DOES NOT prevent the outsides of the bagel from being toasted.Second, half of the slice is significantly darker than the other, and this happens in both sides of the toaster (both slices) and on both sides of each slice. That's so annoying, because I bought this toaster for it's reputation of toasting evenly.I wish I didn't throw away my old toaster already. It didn't toast evenly anymore, and it slightly burned rough edges, but it toasted way more evenly than this brand new toaster. Such a disappointment.
