How big is the opening to walk thru the gate?

How far apart are the bars? Ones person said 2 1/2 inches another said gate bars 4-5 inches, I want this gate to keep 2- 5 lb Maltese dogs in room ?

Hello! The rails on the gate are 2.5" apart and the rails on the extensions are 2.75" apart.

What's the trick to get one of the longer extensions to attach to the gate? It looks like the extension (both) are about a 10th of an inch too short.

The longer extension can only be attached the side of the gate that is further from the gate latch. I finally figured this out. Took a while since it contradicts what the instructions say to do.

Why is the 2 pack cost more than buying 2 individual gates?
