Q: Can you thin this down a little? It's just a little too thick for my purposes.

NicNac, you most definitely can. In fact, I've never used it without thinning it down. I used to thin it down too much, then started scaling back and now I've got just the right amount of water and gesso combination for my works. If all else fails, and you apply too much gesso or not enough water, sand paper works great. I would recommend using 300 grit or something along those lines for fine sanding. But I don't think you'll ever have to resort to that. Good luck! :-)

white gesso is to cover your canvas before you paint a painting.

Q: Is there a need to use Gesso if your canvas says it has 3 coats of primer?

It is not necessary if your canvas is already primed. Some people prefer to add more gesso as a preference.

Q: Is this the same as liquid white that bob Ross uses?

Gesso is a flat acrylic liquid primer used in the Bob Ross Wet-on-Wet Technique when a dry pre-coated canvas is required. Liquid White/Black/Clear are basecoats that allow us to actually blend and mix colors right on the canvas rather than working them on the palette. The Liquid White/Black/Clear can also be used to thin other colors for application over thicker paints.
