Miracle Morning was a simple read and a great guide. I already got up early but didn't exactly know what to do when I got up and this has put a beautiful order into my mornings. A great read especially if you want fresh mornings for yourself.

Despite the fact that I’m retired I’m always after anything to help me progress. I love personal development and motivation ideas so I ordered this book and read it. I recognise that I’m one of those Brits who hates all the gushing Americana, whoops and shouts, high fives and over the top action about things but I actually quite liked the book. There are a few bits that made me cringe but the general philosophy of getting up early and undertaking six activities to better yourself is something I liked. I’ve never had a problem getting up – I’m an early bird anyway – so getting up at six every day was no problem and because I’m retired if I felt a bit tired later in the day I could easily shut my eyes for half an hour. Elrod advocates six activities he calls S.A.V.E.R.S. Silence, Affirmations, Visualisation, Exercise, Reading and Scribing (writing). I suppose if he’d called scribing Writing it would be WAVERS or SWAVER which would not sound so good! He suggests a certain amount of time on each and it’s up to you how you do it and which order you do them in. I do a lot of drawing so I actually added some for a few minutes at the end and I end up writing a page in a journal (Scribing) then I spend a few minutes mind-mapping or doodling. I have a back injury and I’ve been carrying out some exercises several times each day for about ten minutes so I just incorporated them into the routine. For Affirmations I ignored the list he has published on his website because they’re far too long-winded. It’s like reading a book. I went onto the web and searched for ideas and there are hundreds of nice short, memorable ones if you just look for them. You can always just compose your own of course. For the Silence bit I bought “Every Breath You Take” by Rose Elliot, a wonderful little book with 16 breathing exercises to still the mind, calm you down and focus on Mindfulness. I then tried one each week, progressing as I improved. For Reading there are zillions of books to choose from but the focus must be on personal development. I have a few books from my management days but I bought “The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down” by Haemin Sunim. It’s wonderful and first thing in the morning is the absolutely ideal text. The last book I’ll mention is “Sleep” by Nick Littlehales, because getting a good night’s sleep is essential and Littlehales shows in great detail how to do that. His book alone is worth its weight in gold. All in all it’s up to you how you approach it, which order you do things in and how long you spend on each activity. I love the idea and the simplicity of the routine. All you have to do is get up! It’s a great book for anyone at any stage of their lives and I highly recommend it.
