From Robert Eggers, the visionary filmmaker behind the modern horror masterpiece The Witch, comes this hypnotic and hallucinatory tale of two lighthouse keepers (Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson) on a remote and mysterious New England island in the 1890s.As an approaching storm threatens to sweep them from the rock and strange apparitions emerge from the fog, each man begins to suspect that the other has become dangerously unmoored.BONUS FEATURESFeature Commentary with co-writer/ director Robert EggersDeleted ScenesA Dark & Stormy Tale Review: WOW!!!!! - I have to say this film captivated me from the opening scene right until the end, I cannot recommend it enough To start with, the fact it is done in a grainy black and white vision, just sends you back to those incredibly tough times which our forefathers endured. The cinematography is amongst the best I’ve ever watched, the old saying a picture speaks a thousand words certainly rings true in this film. The plot? Well Robert Eggers deliberately leaves much open to interpretation, like myths of old there are many layers to the story with much scope for in depth analysis. It’s the kind of film you have to watch multiple times. There is a layer of masculinity deliberately added to the storyline , only two males all alone in one of the hardest environments one can think of .some suggest toxic masculinity, but in my view that simple term lacks the depth of what the film is trying to present, to me it shows the masculine in all its depth and complexity, showing the virtue of masculine endurance as well as it’s aggressive side. This added with madness and homoeroticism makes for a very dark and complex plot indeed Finally the script and acting is absolutely fantastic both William Defoe and Robert Pattinson rising to a very big challenge indeed, managing not only to live up to the script but surpass it with their acting skills This is absolutely worth a watch Review: A strange movie... - The Lighthouse is a movie from 2019. It was written and directed by Robert Eggers, alongside his brother Max. The director has very little credits to his name but is well known for the 2015 film VVitch. There's a great score from Mark Korven and some impressive cinematography from Jarin Blaschke. The film stars the great Willem Dafoe and the sparkling vampire prince, Robert Pattinson as two lighthouse keepers Wake and Winslow. They're constantly butting heads on their little island and struggle to get on until the day of their relief where the boat doesn't show up. With little food left and too much alcohol, the characters descend into madness. But what is real and what is a figment of their imagination? One of the things that stood out to me is the way the film is presented. The Lighthouse is shown in a 4:3 aspect ratio and is presented in black and white. It's a very bold choice for modern times and I thought it worked very well with the atmosphere of the film. The restricted screen space gave the movie a great claustrophobic feeling and the lack of colourful kind of brought out a darker tone to the whole thing. Despite these restrictions, it was visually stunning with great detail and an excellent amount of depth. Even if the majority of it is in one room. The characters were an interesting combination. I really enjoyed Wake (Dafoe) as the battered old seaman, now enjoying the quiet life in his lighthouse. Winslow (Pattinson) came across as a man with a past, someone with a big dark secret. He's constantly bossed around by Wake and slowly descends into madness after finding an old Mermaid trinket. He starts to hallucinate strange scenarios, starts to witness strange behaviour in Wake and the results in lots of twists, confusion and paranoia. It's not one for those wanting something simple. The film leaves a lot to interpretation and I appreciated that. I've been trying to write a review that avoids spoilers and I can't seem to do it. So, I will just leave this and end by saying that if you're into movie featuring madness, sea monsters and lighthouses, this might be one for you. I thoroughly enjoyed its uniqueness and I'm sure many will too.

The Lighthouse: close to perfection but let down by the script
The Lighthouse could have been such a great film: it has great cinematography, great atmospherics and fantastic acting. Quite perfect, really. But the script lets it down. Had this just been about two men who find themselves in a relationship spiralling out of control as they battle isolation on a lighthouse island, it would have been enough to go on. But the supernatural elements (mermaids, the light in the lighthouse itself) and indeed the rather grotesque ending unfortunately do not enhance but rather dumb down the film. Thomas Wake, the senior lighthouse keeper, jealously guards the keeping of the light of the lighthouse as his own and seems to have a rather special relationship with 'his' light. But this a rather weak narrative point as every 4 weeks a new crew takes care of the lighthouse. Even if there are only 2 crews: don't its members 'feel' something special too? We never get to know. In terms of background, we equally don't know anything about Thomas, except for the fact he's separated from his wife and children. All else is tall tale, true or not. We know Ephraim Wicklow, his junior assistant who applied for this steady job after a life of wandering, was involved in an incident where another man lost his life. From the first he is bullied by Thomas and gets to do all manner of hard work at the lighthouse with little praise for it indeed. At first he refuses the alcohol Thomas offers him but as the depressing weeks grind on he succumbs, which leads to an escalation of violence. Put in superstition, harsh living conditions, isolation, tall tales, hallucinations and alternating attraction and repulsion in this alcohol fuelled orgy and there's enough to drive any man crazy. But we get no sense of who the men really are and the supernatural elements do not seem embedded in the core of this story. And why take some staple element of the horror movie, the 'resurrection' of an enemy thought to be finished off and armed with an axe as well? A bit cheap, that. This gorgeous black-and-white film is worth watching for a whole lot of reasons and I hope the director will go on to produce even more stunning films - but he's got to make sure his storytelling's as gorgeous as are his visuals.
