Fantastic device for Black Walnuts with a tiny, simple modification. Durable.
This is a powerhouse.Do you have black walnuts? If so, this will crack them. However, I suggest modifying the device for additional leverage though. We got a piece of metal conduit that slid over the arm giving us about an extra foot to work with. This increased the leverage and made the black walnuts easier to deal with.I'm not too keep on the left handed operation, but adapted.Black Walnut tip: Soak them in hot water for about 24 hours, drain, then refill with hot water for about one more hour. This softens the shell a bit, but more importantly, they won't shatter as bad as when cracked dry.All in all, the product worked exactly as I needed it to, but I removed one star due to having to mod the handle. HOWEVER, note I would and have suggested this product to others for their nut-cracking needs. It is a solid device. We cracked about 40 pounds of black walnuts over a few days and it held up wonderfully.

strong but slow
I have 2 hard shell (nonpareil) almond trees which has super hard to crack nuts. This device does a great job at breaking the shells. The only issue is it is slow, loading and breaking one nut at a time.

My nuts seem to be too small for this machine.
This nutcracker is well made, but there is one design flaw. I bought the nutcracker for cracking my macadamia nuts. I never thought I had small nuts, but mine seem to be too small for this machine to handle. Even at the back teeth where you could place smaller nuts, mine just barely get squeezed. It would be so easy to make this machine adjustable by using a series of holes and maybe a clevis pin to set the adjustment for different sizes of nuts. I have tried holding my nuts at the smallest area and have been left with only the smallest of teeth marks. This has left me completely unsatisfied.

Construction quality is not very slick, but it does ...
Construction quality is not very slick, but it does seem solid. We could stand a little more room between the handle and the body, as our knuckles get a little close in use. It's formed and welded stock, then spray painted. Anyone with a few tools could build this as well. That said, it is solid and cracks black walnuts with ease. The nuts shatter and scatter. We put the cracker in a tray with tall sides to capture the pieces.

A nice cracker for black walnuts
With black walnut trees everywhere around us, we've been looking for an easier way to crack them open. After quite a bit of research online, we decided to give this one a go. It was a great choice. The mechanics work smoothly, and it cracks those walnuts (yes, the black ones) without any problem. The construction allows for various sizes of nuts. It does need to be connected to a board, table or other underground, but that is not a problem. Bolts/screws are not included, nor did they need to be.The nuts crack a bit in all directions, but my husband enjoys using it quite a bit.

Great Nutcracker
I have many hickory trees and black walnut trees on my property and this nutcracker is the best I've ever used. Cracks then quickly and I can pick out the meats fairly easily. Very easy to use and the lever action allows you to really get some power into the action of cracking the hard-shelled nuts.

Works great. For best functionality it needs to be mounted on a stable base.
This cracker works great. The only thing is it needs to be mounted on a stable base to work best. I have been setting mine on a sturdy table without mounting. It takes some muscle power to get the nuts to crack, but it does not crush them. I have an abundance of black walnuts and this works so much better than a hammer and brick.
