amazing game, even if you're new to the series
I rarely write game reviews but this one deserves some of my time. I never played the original P5 and I went into P5R extremely blind, having almost no concept of the story or even who made up the party cast, with only my enjoyment (mostly) of P4 (which I liked well enough, but did not love) and my friends' recommendations talking me into giving this one a try.I was blown away by how much this game took over my life. At a 105-hour playtime for my first go (with virtually no level-grinding) it definitely gave me my money's worth. I usually get pretty attached to JRPG characters, but I didn't expect to be as involved as I was with this cast. I went from hating some characters to absolutely adoring them by the time the game was over, and every character's side story had me itching to meet with them again and again to see what happened to them, always to the point that I wanted to go out of my way to help them (as you should, given the protagonist's goals and personality). The story is an extremely on-the-nose view of society at times, and it was riveting to see certain problems escalated on the supernatural scale. There were a couple scenes that felt unnecessary or dragged on too long, but that literally made up less than 2% of my runtime overall so I can't even fault it for that. Also, it should be worth noting that I am not good at strategy games and I usually don't like them, but the gameplay never felt unbalanced or too over-the-top challenging as SMT has come to be known for (with the exception of one boss, but a quick Google search assured me that everyone hates this boss and has issues with it and there were some helpful tips to get around it). As I mentioned above, I did almost no level-grinding, with my one exception being that I did so for a bit before trying the very first boss just in case (I was still scarred by getting absolutely flattened by vanilla P4 enemies in the past). But the game does a very good job of balancing fights in between scenes so that you don't have to go out of your way to power yourself up; as long as you don't just run past everything in a dungeon, chances are good you'll be at a comfortable level for each boss.I could go on all day about this game, but suffice to say I got a lot more out of it than what I was expecting. While I have nothing against P4, I thought P5 was an improvement on the series in every way, from the battle system to the social aspects to even just the likability of the main cast. The number of plot twists in this game is staggering, and the fact that they are all GOOD plot twists is even more amazing.TL;DR if you're waffling on trying this game and the points I made appeal to you, I say go for it, especially if it's on sale like it was when I lucked out and bought it. I would definitely recommend P5R over the original, also, given that a lot of the content I enjoyed most is only available in this version. And as a final side note, once I finished the game, I looked up the "censorship controversy" that a lot of these reviews ramble about... and please, pay them no attention. The scenes in question weren't even "censored," the translation was just changed slightly to have a more acceptable cultural annotation than what's considered okay in Japan. These kinds of changes are made to every single thing that gets translated into English, and they never get called out because they just don't matter (like this one). If you're honestly angry about that insignificant change, you're too sensitive to be giving your public opinion about anything.

Geart game.
Honeslty this is one of the best JRPG I played and what got me to JRPG in the last 2 years. In my eyes this is a masterpiece even with all it fliawes like how easy it is to just make yourself broken by the 4th dungen if you understand the game machenices.

Literally one of the best turn-based RPGs ever.
If you like that sort of gameplay (Think Pokemon, Dragon Quest, some older Final Fantasy games), you will absolutely love Persona 5 Royal. The story is amazing. No spoilers, but it's deep and interesting without being overly convoluted. The gameplay is simple without being simplistic. It's easy to understand how to win battles, but there is a lot of substance and variety in the moves to give you complexity if you want it.The music is seriously one of the best in video game history. Go find the soundtrack on YouTube, if you don't fall in love with it I genuinely question if you have a soul. The only reason I'd say you shouldn't play this is if you've already played P5, because while this does have extra content, I can't say it's enough to justify buying a whole separate game. Otherwise, this is the version to buy and play.

A masterpiece in RPG!
This is my second Persona game after Persona 4 Golden. I came in with very high expectations since 4 was such an amazing game and I had heard such good things about P5. I was not disappointed at all and the game delivered in every aspect. The game took many things that were great in P4G and made them even better. This includes better confidant experiences and a more intense story arc. However I was most impressed by the improvement in the combat. The HUD display looks so clean and refined compared to the P4. There are also some really good boss fights including a few really awesome super bosses which I won't spoil. P5R also features 2 new characters and a 3rd semester with a new ending. The new characters are really likeable and blend in well with the overarching plot. Also, the added 3rd semester really helps flesh out some characters and events that wouldn't have been present in the original Persona 5. Overall this is one of the finest games I have played in the last decade.

Royale with DLC
As much as I like Persona 5, I never really fell for it like I did P4G. After three play throughs of Vanilla 5, I put Persona away for awhile. Then P4G dropped on PC.It was the best memories and music all over again. While I had ignored Royal, it was time to go back. Save for Mona, the characters in 5 never really got me. The story spun up fine but stalled about half way. The visual style was cool - at first - then wore me out. P5 is a good game and a good Persona game, but just misses the high mark.Royal I think, doesn’t actually do much better. While Maruki is slotted in well to the OG story, the end doesn’t pay off his themes very well. The ‘extra content’ for the third semester feel just as much if not more forced than Marie is P4G. Mementos wasn’t my jam before but a few hours is mandatory in there all over again. Also Okumura’s palace and boss fight are still the low point of the game. So much in Royal feels like a Christmas Special from an 80s TV show that isn’t really necessary. The game is still an Atlus product where a few bosses are too easy and a few are just insanely hard.In my first review of P5 I said I still missed my friends and music in P4. I still do. Persona 5 Royal is extra toppings on the burger challenge sandwich, but I’d rather get a beef bowl in Inaba.
