Invader: Book Two of Foreigner (Foreigner series 2)

A wonderful series where the characters continue to grow across the books
Such a good story in the old fashioned sense of a saga. You will end up being happy to read all 17 (19?) books across long evenings. Bren, Iisidi, and Cajeiri will become your welcomed companions on this thoughtful and thrilling space opera. I can't wait for the next two books to be published. CJ Cherrryh doesn't disappoint!

A Solid Sequel
CJ Cherryh is one of my favorite writers and the second book of the Foreigner series has all of her trademark complexity and smart plotting. The characters are sharp and interesting and the dialogue, especially as performed for the Audible selection, is engaging and entertaining. It's probably not fair to withhold a star from a perfect rating simply because this novel (and this series) just don't resonate with me as well as Cherryh's Alliance-Union novels and series do. In fact, now that I think about it, the author is the victim of her own skill here. The latter setting and stories are almost entirely about humans, though of very different classes and cultures. In the Foreigner series, the MC is virtually the only human we "see" throughout most of the action. Cherryh's ability to make her aliens... well, "alien" (but still quite believable) probably accounts for the slight dislocation that I feel when reading the Foreigner books. That, being the case, I'd say "well done," and let's call it 4-and-a-half stars, shall we?

Excellent!!
This entire series is incredible. The pace can be very slow at times and I'll confess I tend to skip over some of the main characters musings as they seem to go on and on. These books, so far up to number 7, are mostly inside the main characters head. It's not written in first person but third limited. So we only know what the main character knows and we discover things as he does. So the tendency is for the main character to wonder about this and ponder about that. Based on what he knows, based on his ability to surmise and come to logical conclusions, he will think and figure things out in his head.So with that said there tends to be less action than other SCi-Fi books and in this world of fast paced adventure movies, I'm sure not every reader will enjoy this book or the series. But, each book builds on the last and gets better and better and better and if you have patience and can understand from the beginning that this is more of a cerebral type of book then it is my opinion that these books are apart of the best written Sci-Fi extant. The author has the ability to, through the main character's musings and interaction with the other main characters, compare the differences between vastly different races and actually shed light on how we in our society could learn to interact with and live along side others who are different from ourselves. And as the series continues she continues to delve into the differences and similarities between races. She sheds light on the inner workings of the human psyche in times of extreme pressure. Interactions between one human culture and another; between humans and aliens who though vastly different from humans, are, at the same time, similar.

What is your word for trust, and what does it really mean?
This is the second book of Bren Cameron, who is the translator, interpreter, and go-between between the castaway nation of humans and the ateva inhabitants of the planet. After a disastrous war, the humans agreed to gradually turn over their science and technology in exchange for a separate survival, with a single human arbiter to prevent change from disrupting ateva society or the peace. But now the human spaceship has returned, Both castaway and ateva society have breakaway elements that want to use this change to reshape society so as to exclude the other. Bren is for balance, and unity, but has no absolute faith that he can strike that balance, since he is still foreign to the Ateva (who have no words for love, friendship, or liking, apart from salads), can have no understanding of the humans of the spaceship, who left the humans behind two centuries before, and is increasingly alienated from the culture that he grew up in. On his side, (maybe) the leader of the Ateva who shares some ideas of the future, but who would sacrifice him for the sake of those hopes, the leader's grandmother who is also a powerful political leader in her own right, and of course, the guild of assassins, who seek to maintain order. Is there anyone on the spaceship who both can and will help Bren in finding the balance? This is the best series about the meeting of widely different cultures meeting and the traps to be avoided, that I have ever read.

An emotional rollercoaster
I do love this series, and this book is ... perfect. Trust me, I'm trying to find faults.I wish I could compare it to other books so you as a reader could understand, but I can't. This is a singular experience. It's just brilliant. Nothing less than that. I started the series reading, and I must admit, out of spite, because it is very difficult for a non-english speaker. It just is, with it's 2-3 levels of sub-sentences (?) in each sentence, and all the implied meanings and unspoken implications. But it lends a credability to it all. It's hard to explain. You need to read the books, and get your Hollywood notion of villain and hero turned upside down. Get your notion of romance morphed. Get your idea of propriety totally redefined. Get your picture of relations turned upside down. Cherryh has done an astounding piece of work here. It paints pictures atevi and humans could never feel, and you find yourself "feeling" atevi. You'll understand that last one when you've read it :)Cherryh has done a fabulous job of twisting most human notions of any thing human by explaining them as exactly that. Human. And I, for one, are left with the feeling of having read something non-human.It's really hard to explain - at least for a non-english speaker.Read it. Build your man'chi.

More to think about in just a few pages
....than most writers manage to pack into a whole book. Really makes you think about where we each actually fit in the world, and what we are doing to make it a better place...

Nicht so actionreich wie der 1. Teil
