After reading this book, I went out on a perfectly clear night before dawn and took some of the most amazing photographs I ever have. This book has opened up a new world of photographic possibilities to me. Absolute Beginer book
This book contains everything you need to take pictures like the one I took, I used low budget equipment and the result was amazing, Jennifer and James provide the Recipe for taking stunning pictures without having a degree or experience as a professional photographer, covers the most common settings for your camera in different scenarios it also provides ideas for post-processing edition to add more flavor to your pictures. The negatives reviews are pointless, don't downgrade a product just because you are not smart enough to follow simple steps or if you are a lazy reader, You must understand that this is a set of ideas/approaches for taking a picture with low light and unfavorable conditions, not all cameras, conditions, lighting, etc.. will be the same. Also if you own a professional camera or an entry-level camera you MUST know its features, settings, limitations, etc. Some reviews downgrade this book because they don't know how to use their camera, if you struggle with some terms... just google them(this applies to all hobbies, careers, etc)If you are a PRO and have already taken pics of the night sky then this is not for you (I mean you already know this...) if you are a rookie this book is for you.

Very Good Guide Book
This book covers the basics and then some about photographing the night sky. It is well written, concise and offers a way to plan your start into this neat field of photography. She includes many lists of things from equipment to what to take on a shoot to how to set up your equipment for the shoot. Even though she is a Canon person she includes info about Nikon lenses and bodies which is a help. Its a very useful book and I have already used it to get some great pictures of the milky way.

Finally, a book that demystifies and simplifies DSLR photography of the night sky!
I am a novice photographer and have never taken any formal courses or training in photography. My interest in photography is as a hobby and as I am a physician I have limited free time so I needed a nuts and bolts guide to get me on the right track. Right out of the box I took this book and my camera gear on a long summer weekend to Beaufort, NC where on a clear night you may still see the Milky Way and wanted to take some long exposure night shots. I spent some time reading this book and dog-eared the pages I needed and once I was set up I was able to shoot manual bulb exposures using my DSLR that I would not have easily done fumbling around on the internet trying to find simple recipes for shooting particular night sky phenomena. I was able to shoot the Milky Way (looks way more impressive on an HD TV than I ever thought it would), star trails, and have since captured several long duration exposures of the International Space Station over my home in Raleigh. One I knew how to set the camera up the only thing I needed to know was what I wanted to shoot and when.Admittedly, these techniques are quite simple once you understand how to set-up the camera. The thing I lacked was a "guru" who could simply provide the "secrets" on how to take the shots. This book met my needs and as the title indicates, it is a field guide.

An Excellent Way To Start
I have long wanted to go into night sky photography, and this is one book that I found to be an excellent place to start. The photography is marvelous. The book is very well laid out, and Jennifer takes you through the nuances of night sky photography in a very structured manner. It is not too technical, and can be used by anyone who is entering this area. What I really like, as well, is the fact that she gives settings for Nikon cameras, as well as Canon. What I also like is the rich library of resources that she leaves behind, and the chapter on post-processing.Highly recommended for anyone who wants to enter this area of photography

Fun, 'tactical' guide to night time photography
I purchased this book based on a recommendation from a website and was not disappointed. The book is well written and fun to read with just the right amount of reading and example pictures. The checklists are a helpful addition and something I will reference in the future. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to practice their skills at nighttime photography. This is geared more towards those who are comfortable shooting in M.
