The Uniden R7 has incredible range and accuracy it easily spots radar from far away and the directional arrows make it simple to locate the source. GPS lockouts, red-light, and speed camera alerts all work well. That said, you need to adjust the settings after setup. Out of the box, it’ll beep at nearly every traffic light or sensor, which gets annoying fast. Once you turn off unnecessary bands and set GPS lockouts for regular routes, it becomes much quieter and more reliable. After tuning it properly, it’s one of the best radar detectors out there just be ready to spend a few minutes customizing it.

I can't recommend this radar detector enough! I was not an experienced user of radar detectors, but had a road trip planned to drive across the country and I wanted a quality, effective, reliable device. I'm not a big speeder on the road, but I just like knowing when they're watching me. Keeps me honest. I did my research, and found the R7 to be the best equipped and highest rated radar detector at this price point. I was a little skeptical when I bought it; but I was hopeful it would work for me. It was very easy to install on my windshield. When I started using it at the beginning of my trip, it was pretty much useless because it was picking up every signal from every vehicle around me (including my own vehicle's lane-watch radar system). That night, I connected it to my computer and updated its firmware to the current version, and then went into the settings and turned down the sensitivity for the radar it was constantly picking up. After I did that, it worked like a fine-tuned piece of technology. It meticulously detected every sitting police car using radar well in advance. In most cases, I received a good 1 or 2 mile warning that I was approaching radar. Once you get used to the signals its picking up on and where they're coming from, this radar detector is a driver's best friend.

First off delete Scotts scam review as he doesn't know what he's talking about!! Mounted in 2017 Golf R, received the R7 April 18 and have used since then and replaced a Escort Max 360 which I loved. I-5 in Fife Washington is getting hammered by WSP too slow everyone down to 50 and so far have had 5-6 bogeys every morning at 4am for 2 weeks. Scott I have been hit every morning by KA band by 3-6 hits by half a mile easy and no laser is being used by WSP in cars but motorcycle cops use laser almost all the time so watch for them, usually on the way home. Through the Fife area 1 mile before or after set cruise control to 50 and do not speed through this area, EVER!! In two weeks I have been paced from behind going North in this area twice and one cop had his radar on and got him really early with the rear radar as he nailed the truck behind me doing 70 coming up on me doing 65----close but I new he was back there so I was slowing from 75 from just a minute before. One day hit by Laser with R7 but luckily had adaptive cruise set at 65 and had no hit on detector but saw cop point gun at me and switch to others behind me so be careful with laser detection. KA about the same so far as Max 360 but K band is far superior with R7 and people will tell you no K band really in WA but so far 3 hits from WSP and one in Kent Wa with all cops with radar on full time and picked them up so far I thought all were Hondas or GMC, nope. Falsing so far is about same as Max 360 new software update helped a little on Hondas but trip to Oregon this weekend still picking them up but they need to be really close. Trip to Oregon on Thursday mostly quiet especially in Oregon, creepy did 200 miles no cops and even drove all the way around Mount Hood but nothing! No cops, nothing? Hit 120 once or twice maybe not saying I did but had fun and hope no hidden cameras like they use in Oregon but the locals speed quite a bit. Now on the way back to WA going N at about 7am just past Vancouver WA got a K band from the rear in and out with nobody behind for about 1 mile just a small pack that was following a pack I was in doing 75. First thought was a false from a car or something but detector didn't quit alerting and it was getting stronger so my spidey sense didn't feel right so I set cruise again to 70. Finally saw a car come through the pack from behind with led lights wasn't sure what it was and I was losing the pack I was in because I cut 5 mph just to be safe. Guess what a WSP dark grey Dodge went full K band at a mile back once his pack cleared and he went into the slow lane and hit the beans and caught me in a couple of seconds with detector screaming K band all the way and it was only set at 60% K band!! Wife was impressed the detector had him about 5 minutes before and we agreed the detector just paid for itself because earlier we were going quite a bit faster!!! Had one more rear encounter going N at Chehalis WA and picked it up again early with full on K band going into a 70mph zone to 60mph zone so after last encounter set cruise to 60. Guess what another silver dodge WSP doing about 80 from behind hunting for in front speeders, f --- jerks!! Once again wife was watching detector like a Hawk and was amazed how early the R7 was alerting us on K band. Sorry for long review but Scott You Are Wrong!! In two weeks the R7 probably saved me from a couple of tickets at just a bit over. Max 360 is really good and I like some of its features but its K band range doesn't come close to the R7, I think its over filtered, K band is still out there guys! Arrows are a must as I have had several detectors without them but I will never go back to no Arrows. The R7 switches from front to side to rear faster than the Max 360 but not a deal breaker but so far very impressed with R7!!! Need more time with the R7 but Max 360 currently has saved me over the last year at least 10 times but one ticket on Lidar that was my fault because I didn't react fast enough as it actually gave me a enough time but I was too busy ignoring it. Thanks to Vortex but be careful of band segmentation as I had several readings outside of segmentation on both bands and I don't want to go to court to argue these readings. I run wide on all K and KA bands just to be safe and the R7 still has great range. Lots of K and KA over the last Year so don't believe Scott the lazy cops use RADAR not Lidar!!! Oh and the County Cops coming at you in the oncoming lanes almost always have their RADAR on! Good luck and if you don't have a RADAR detector don't go over 5mph over speed limit or you will get a Ticket!!

I bought this detector because other reviews said quote; "False alert city." <--- This to me means a superior product because its more sensitive than other detectors. My research online and via reviews also confirms that this detector is the most sensitive on the market. Quiet Mode is amazing along with self-selecting sensitivity based on speed. THIS RADAR DETECTOR IS NOT USER-FRIENDLY!!! (I would underline this if I could) If you want something you just plug in and it works, this detector is not for you. Firmware updates require a laptop or PC to complete (But the process is simple.) Here are some GOOD instructions on how to update firmware for any of the R-models: Google search: "Uniden (Revision #) R7 firmware update." This will take you to Uniden's firmware download page. The only thing you want or need is the Windows/Mac installer (Whichever one you use) download and run from PC. Using the USB cable that comes with the unit, plug it in to the PC and to the radar detector. Run the installer. After installation, configure your radar detector settings. I would suggest letting the radar detector senitivity be set based on speed automatically and enable quiet drive with the limit set to 20 or 30mph depending on user-prefrences. Save and Exit You may now mount your radar detector and plug it in. Anyone complaining about "false alert city" did not configure their radar detector properly for their environment (And probably manually set it to LONG range) This is the quietest and most accurate radar detector ive ever owned. COBRA cant hold a candle to the quality this unit possesses. If you are looking for a Radar Detector that is ALSO user-friendly, I strongly recomend Escort. The premium you pay with them is for User-Friendlyness. (They have a REALLY simple software suite thats easy for the avg user to use and access.) My ONLY complaint is that this unit isnt user friendly and it didnt matter to me at all but might to others. Take the time, configure the product for the way you want it and itll pay dividends. It will NOT simply work the way you want it to out of the box. PS: Ive figured out the complaints people have about the false alerts. Smart cars with radar proximity sensors. My car has it. It uses 3-4 frequencies that the radar detector ALWAYS triggers on if there are cars or walls around. To fix this, making sure auto-mute is enabled, allow muting of KA band. There is a toggleable setting to ignore weak signals and this needs be enabled as well. After your next drive, your UNIDEN will automatically start ignoring the radar signals as they start to spam you and auto-mute them. I also want to note; This radar detector managed to detect a cop running active scanning while driving around 3 turns. Ive never seen a radar detector manage this feat. I detected him about a half mile away around 3 turns. Crazy good detection now that its configured properly. Changing my rating to 5/5. It takes some configuration but ive never used a better radar detector.

I’ve used the R7 for almost a year now. I’d like to answer some of the questions and complaints that people have about this in their low rated review because it’s clear they don’t take the time to learn about the firmware, the software, and how the device works. 1. I see plenty about false alarms on this. Now admittedly I do still have some false alerts, BUT I also only keep mine in highway mode because I’m almost always using the highway anyway. Now that doesn’t mean I always get a constant beep from the device. If you take the time to update the firmware and keep it updated, it uses GPS to eventually identify and auto mute those false alerts. I don’t even have to do anything except drive by them a few times and the device will mute them for me! 2. I’ve seen some complain about the sensitivity, which is kinda related to it being too noisy. The great thing about this radar detector is that on the computer using the software provided by the company, you can configure specific frequencies to ignore so it isn’t always going off next to outlet malls or stores or whatever. The amount of customization you can do on this thing is so granular, you can set it to be specifically for your area. 3. Too expensive? Alright let’s put it like this. You have a device that fits in the palm of your hand, that can alert you to potential police traps, let you know what direction it’s coming from, prioritize multiple detections based on the band type, and how strong the signal is, AND it pays for itself in just a couple of detections. Not to mention the customization you can do to it, the firmware with GPS locations that are updated by others who use the radar detector, and just how detailed you can get with your customizations. This radar detector has saved me more than a few times, and it’s got plenty of functionality to ensure that your drive is quiet when it needs to be, and noisy when there’s danger. If you don’t understand the technology you’re buying, don’t give it a negative review because of it.

It's a fantastic radar detector and really lives up to its reputation as one of the top 10 radar detectors on the market today. The number of options it allows me to choose from to tailor itself to my environment is absolutely wonderful compared to other radar detectors I have used and observed. Pros: 1. RIDICULOUS RANGE: The website and reviews weren't kidding when they said that the range was ridiculously long. I've been able to detect digital speed limit signs, speed traps, and law enforcement radar signals from roughly one mile to two miles away whereas the Cobra radar detectors and some Escort radar detectors could only pick it up from a couple of hundred meters. 2. DIRECTIONAL DETECTION: Not only does it give the proximity of the signal it's picking up, but it also gives the direction from where it is coming from. 3. RADAR TYPES: It can pick up X,K, Ka, KPOP, MRCD/T, Red Light Cameras, etc. Surprisingly, it can pick up a lot of different types of radar as compared to other radar detectors that can only pick up X, K, and Ka. 4. WILDLY SUPERIOR FILTERING: As you go through the settings, it gives you many filtering options that you can tailor for the environment you drive around in. Something I had a lot of trouble with while using and observing many radar detectors is how poorly the filtering systems performed. For example, in Utah, the traffic light sensors operate on Ka on the 33GHz frequencies which cheaper radar detectors easily picked up. On top of this, the memory lockout systems weren't the greatest in the cheaper radar detectors and often had to be recognized through a connected app. The GPS system and Auto Mute Memory feature plus the numerous filtering options in the settings allow for a much quieter and far more accurate ride from point a to point b. INVISIBLE: Great thing about the r7 is that it cannot be picked up by most radar detector detectors(RDD) like VG-2 and Spectre. It can be picked up by Spectre Elite HOWEVER it cant really do so very well. The Spectre Elite would be able to pick it up but with lots of inaccurate distortions in its readings. It would have to be very close to the r7 to even accurately pick it up. Besides that, its pretty much invisible to RDDs. While there are a whole lot more Pros, I won't go into much more into detail about it. Cons: DOES NOT PICK UP RDD: Unfortunately, something the R7 does not pick up that the cheaper radar detectors pick up like the Cobra RAD480i are the Radar Detector Detectors or RDD for short. While it wouldn't matter much for the r7 since its invisible there are a few underlying reasons as to why I would want the r7 to be able to pick up RDDs. In some areas of the United State, police officers will switch off their radar and only run their RDDs. Not being able to pick up their radar when its turned off and not being able to pick up their RDDs is similar to blindly walking into pitch-black darkness without any clue as to what may be lurking within. Being able to pick up VG-2 and Spectre would be like an added protection to yourself when driving. DIRECTIONAL DETECTION: While it detection capabilities are phenomenal and the that it can give me the direction from which the signals are coming from, it does get confused sometimes by where the radar signals are coming from. Mind you, this isn't a big issue, it happens from time to time, not really a big deal.
