Sturdy parts, intuitive, space-saving, addictive dirty water tank, APPEARS/HOPING $ justified
First of all, I was READY to clean my carpets. Moved the furniture out of the living room, and my teens took turns cleaning my very dirty (beyond all hope?) carpet. They weren't having a lot of success for their effort, and my son realized that our 16 year old trusty Royal had a crack in the clean water tank. I immediately went online looking for a replacement tank, but the entire unit has been discontinued (probably a decade or more ago) and I wanted to cry. What to do?I had owned a cheaper (Box Warehouse) BISSELL 20 years ago, and was disappointed that after just a few years of biannual cleaning of a small 1600 foot only half-carpeted home, it was not operating well. Taking it to a repair shop, I was disappointed to hear that the make/model were only intended to last a couple years, and I had been lucky to double that. They recommended the Royal which was 10x easier to clean and just a better made, solid machine, even though it cost 2x what I had paid for the BISSELL. I swore off using BISSELL products in the future. But, two weeks ago, I did hours and hours of research, and based on my findings, finally decided to give the BG10 a chance. The new machine arrived, and I took it out of the box (assembled! Nice!) and put it to use, only to find that the soapy water only came out in the middle 3 inches of the machine (not entirely across the 11 inch front as expected). After consulting the manual and the internet, I contacted tech support through Amazon. (I had emailed BISSELL as well, as they were already closed for the business day). Following careful analysis over the phone, it was determined that the machine was faulty (this was verified via email from BISSELL support) and Amazon immediately emailed me a UPS label for return and sent a replacement. They did not make me wait until they received the machine to ship me a new one. Bonus point for BISSELL. It is important to note that I had returned my furniture back to the living room in the week interim, and moved it out again for my 2nd attempt. I was hosting two birthday parties in the coming weekend and cleaned the worst part of the carpet just to get by with the faulty 1/3 operational machine (meaning 3x as many passes with faulty extractor for the same results as a functional machine.) However, I was pleased. Also, I purchased the additional hand held hose/upholstery cleaner, and this worked like a charm. It, too, is very intuitively designed. The following is a breakdown in bullet points by Pros/Cons.PROS:-The machine is very intuitively set up with hard plastic parts that are unlikely to be problematic like my BISSELL 20 years ago was (thickish plastic bag dirty water tank inside the hard plastic clean water tank-which made for good space saving but ultimately failed more quickly and was SO HARD TO CLEAN.-Even if it were not intuitively easy to use, the basic directions are on stickers on the machine! Cool!-Very easy to clean.-My husband and I are both 6 feet tall. I was concerned about the ergonomics of a shorter handle than our last machine, but this was easy to push and pull.-This machine has a smaller, more compact base than my last machine AND folds in half! This is so great for space saving!! Love it!!-There are lots of videos online for just about any question you may have (excepting maybe your machine only putting out a third of the cleaning solution that it should, but that appears to be a rare, strange lemon case)-BISSELL and Amazon were wonderful to work with.-I purchased the 3x Bissell cleaning solution as recommended in a review, and WOW! The solution or the machine or the combination cause a very addictive drive to clean your carpet JUST SO YOU CAN DUMP THE DIRTY WATER IN THE SINK! It is very satisfying.-I was determined to buy new carpet, but my husband wants to wait 5 more years until the kids are out of the house (and take their puppy with them!) Impossible! Our carpet was past gone and SO NASTY. But after using my BG10, I now have hope! Waiting won’t be THAT bad!-I’m pretty sure that the crack in my last machine was due to my husband carting this machine to his mom’s house a couple of times to clean her carpet for her. This machine was MADE to travel, and it appears very sturdy. I am hoping it does its duty and travels well if he feels compelled to clean her carpets again.-The water is SO dirty, even after multi-directional cleaning, that part of me wondered if the BISSELL cleaner is designed to turn brown after it runs through the machine. It is really quite incredible. The water sucking up through the machine is visible through a window, and it honestly doesn’t look all that dirty. But when I dump the water out in the sink, it’s like a mud and sand pit. Sand? Really? Where is THAT coming from? It is a very fulfilling task when you see such incredible results!-This extractor is unique from the rest that I researched in that it sucks/extracts going forward and backward. One reviewer mentioned how set apart this makes the BG10, because this saves you half the time to do the same job as other cleaners.-My kids commented that this extractor must suck up more water, because we all feel the carpet is drier more quickly after a cleaning. This does seem to be true. Before, we would turn on the ceiling fans and not replace the furniture on the carpet for 24 hours to ensure that the wood feet of the furniture would not crack/warp. Nice.-I read complaints that the cleaner leave a small (1/2 inch?) gap between the wall and the unit, but I have never seen a machine that did this, and I would not want it to. You want a little gap between the furniture and the machine, or you could cause water damage to wood. If you need to get closer, use the hand held hose.-Others complained that the machine is unwieldy. I did not find this to be the case. I am in my mid 40s, and this maneuvered as expected and like other machines. It doesn’t feel any heavier or wider or more difficult to move to a new carpet lane than others I have used. This may be different for someone older. Or maybe this could be your workout routine!CONS:-The front of my machine said that a trial size formula was in the water tank and would need to be removed before use. Nope. (SEE PICTURES) And there was not one in the replacement machine either. What’s up with that? I did purchase a 52 oz bottle of BISSELL Clean and Protect 3x formula at the same time as the machine, but it came a couple days later. I had to wait. The trial formula would have been a handy inclusion.-My carpet pills when I carpet clean. I used to think that was a sign of a really good cleaner, but have since read that it means the cleaner is too harsh on the carpet. This machine probably pills 10 per cent of what my BISSELL from 20 years ago would pill, but my Royal hardly pilled up at all. However, my carpet is over 20 years old. And I plan to replace it in 5 years. Not a big deal for me.- The upholstery/spot hose cleaner (which I do highly recommend) costs an additional 50 dollars! That brings the total cost for the machine and hose to just under 600 dollars. This was double what I had planned/hoped to pay for a replacement machine. But…well…inflation affects us everywhere, and this machine is intended as a rental, so hopefully I will get another 16 years of biannual use out of this machine like I did my last one, making this a worthwhile investment. I really don’t know why anyone would not want the spot cleaner, except that by selling the two items separately, BISSELL can charge more/hide the costs? Just include it already.-The soap dispenser is a button on the right side of the handle. I am right handed, but my husband is a leftie. Not sure if this would be a problem or not. He doesn’t really use the machine much. My last machine had the dispenser on the underside of the handle so it was convenient for left or right handed users. However, that was depressed with the middle finger, having a mid-line handle like a vacuum. I took turns operating the machine with the left hand, and holding the cord with my right and vice versa. However, the BG10 is more like a “T-shaped” handle which would be very uncomfortable if it had a button to depress in the middle. Two depressors (for right and left handed users) would just give the extractor one more thing that could break, so I don’t know that this would be a good answer either. However, it is worthy of mention.-The machine uses quite a bit of soap (two cup fulls for a tank of clean water). My Royal was a very conservative soap dispenser. A bottle would last me a couple years. I do not expect this to last me a whole year. I used three tanks of water and 6 caps of soap so far cleaning one hallway and my medium-sized living room once (left, right, forward, backward and diagonal each way, which is what I typically do).-The upholstery/spot cleaner hose is made of solid gray plastic. It would be nice if the top were made of the clear plastic like the machine dirty water tank has on the front so you can see when the liquid is no longer coming up (your job is complete). It is also very satisfying to see the stains coming up via the dirty water suds.-It is a tad on the loud side (over 80 decibels per other reports), but all the machines I have used have been comparable. I just use 30+ decibel blocking ear plugs. Hard to listen to music, but if that is what is necessary for a functional product, this is something I am willing to deal with.-My Royal had a separate soap tank which attached to the clean water tank via a tiny hose. This meant that at the end of use, I could dump the clean water tank, dump and clean the dirty water tank, and just leave the soap there to be sucked up at the right water/soap ratio in the future. This was a BEAUTIFUL feature (one of my favorites!) Please consider this as an option for future BG10 units. Just now, I finished cleaning a bedroom carpet, and only used half the water/soap. I can’t pour it back into the concentrated bottle. I am not supposed to leave it in the tank. I don’t need/have time to clean an already cleaned carpet. Conundrum. All in all, had to move my furniture 3x in 2 weeks in order to get my carpet clean. *groan*However, I am very happy with this product (and the company's tech support and operational videos) and I think you will be, too.

Amazing, long lasting and durable!
After always renting this machine over the years from Lowe’s I decided to buy one. I must say definitely worth buying. I have already used this machine almost a dozen times already and impresses me every time. From cleaning normal carpets in your home, area rugs, stairs, cars and even the RV. Which by the way, the add-on hoses come in handy for that as well. I have bought other carpet cleaners that they sell at Walmart and Target over the years and this is by far way better, especially when it comes to cleaning and maintaining your machine. Every piece is heavy duty easy to get normally hard to reach places for cleaning your machine. The suction power is by far great. Would definitely recommend for anybody.

Best cleaner for home use
I spent a lot of time looking into this. I have expensive wool carpet and rugs I was told steam clean only by the carpet store. I read contradictory information on that online but everyone agreed hot water is bad for the fibers so I was not comfortable buying a steam extractor.I chose the BG 10 based on other recommendations.I used it yesterday and love it.Pros…Lighter weight than the Rug Doctor so it’s easier to work withEasy to fill clean and dirty water tanksMy BG10 will be clean every time I use it, as opposed to the dirty and smelly Rug Doctors I rentedIt works very well at its job…. Cleaning my carpetsLeaves the carpet drier than the rented RDs.It pays for itself after the first cleaning of the carpets and rugs versus using a professionalWe have very hard water here and I believe that many cleanings over the years have left some calcium residuals on the fibers of the carpets that I replaced. Those fibers felt stiff and almost crusty after 15 cleanings. . It wasn’t dirt so I believe it was the calcium in the water.I use distilled water for cleaning the new carpet and did two separate rinse runs with it too. The carpet feels soft. There was zero perfume smell from the Bissell Woolite with Oxy cleaning solution after the rinses The water was still a little dirty even after the second rinse even though the carpets were only a year old, don’t get a lot of foot traffic, and looked clean. That tells me this machine works.I put a couple of fans on and the carpets were dry in about 3 hours. They smell great. If you want to protect your wool carpets and keep them clean, the BG10 will be a great purchase.

Worth it if you have multiple pets
Skip the rental, buy this! It works better than any "home" grade carpet cleaner, is faster, and extracts more water. A must have if you have pets. Handles my Huskys hair just fine, easy to break down and clean, and easy to put away as the handle folds down.
