Could paint and varnish smells in a home set the units off? The home is only used on occasional weekends so is shut up a lot.

I believe that newly applied spray paint or varnish could set them off, but once the particles have settled out of the air I don't think only odors can set them off. We replaced our 2008 house units with newer models after 2-3 yrs. and they seem be working fine for us now. We have suspected heavy use of hairsprays or aerosol cleaners in the bathrooms set off false alarms since our bathrooms were close to the detectors located in halls near bedrooms. I think it would be smart to not have the detector units in place when doing the the spray painting or wood finishing in a new home.

i just purchased this. what if i dont have a place to wire it into my house? i know nothing electrical wise so what am i suppose to do?

Get a different model that only uses batteries. There an argument that a battery one is preferable since you will need to periodically check it, and one off of the house power you tend to ignore, and then it fails when house power is off, even though it ha a battery back-up which is died earlier. Regrettably that has happened to me.

Do you have to get an electrician to wire this thing up?

Yes, you will need someone with an electricians background to connect the electrical leads to the existing home wiring.
