Joe Alves: Designing Jaws

Perfect in depth look at the making of an icon.
I’ve just received the book but at first flick through I’m really happy with the book. This is literally the about making of the shark, “Bruce”, in Jaws.Loads of early pencil sketches, photos and blue prints on the how the team constructed the iconic beast and great seeing concepts for shots that did not make it into the final film.I highly recommend this book for anyone who’s a fan of the film and has any interest in animatronics and mechanics.

Hmmm. Looks like I’m on my own here. As a massive Jaws fan, there was nothing in this book I hadn’t already seen or heard. Although the book looks great, there is very little content wise that will surprise. There’s too much in the way of rough sketches and storyboards for me - to the point that you just skip loads of pages, because it just doodles that are over 40 years old. The real negative point of this tome is the middle section which is about 20 pages of storyboards. Pure filler. I love Bruce as much as anyone here, but this is not the book for me.Now if you want a making of book, go for the “Labyrinth: the ultimate visual history”. Beautiful.
