Could someone tell me if the mains cable comes out of the low side of the lamp on the cement colour lamp as shown on the amazon picture

Disappointingly NO but from the high side - would have preferred the top to swivel or the cable to exit from the low side

Is it normal for the outside to get vvvvv hot

No, it doesn't get hot. I tend to move it around by the base when it's on, but am not aware of feeling any heat coming off it - nor even from the top, and I have it shining on something wooden, which doesn't seem to get warm. I'll give an update to this after checking more thoroughly if it's not accurate, as I don't touch it much once on.

Would this light give sufficient light if put next to a bed on the floor to read with ?

We use these with low wattage bulbs to light corners of rooms which they do beautifully and discreetly. Intuitively I wouldn't use a light pointed at a ceiling to read by but I guess if your eyes are young and you had a strong wattage lamp it would be possible although not ideal for me personally.

Can an alexa controlled bulb be fitted

No it wouldn’t fit but you can control via an Alexa plug
