You do not say if rodents have breached your skirting board by gnawing a hole, if yes, replace damaged skirting board and pursue and eradicate the rodent. Do not use poison as they have already breached your premises and will hide and die there, very smelly. As a temporary measure you can cut the mesh to size and staple to the site of entry/damaged skirting until you’ve sorted the rodent. You could ease the board away from the wall and slide the appropriate size of mesh behind the skirting board. At the end of the day rodents are entering from an entry point outside, damaged brickwork, loosened mortar around utilities entry point and getting between air gap in the walls. Check for damaged air vents and repair with the mesh, it’s an easy pliable material to work and attach to simple wooden batons and frames with staples.
