Other tension rods don't allow curtains to slide nicely along the rod due to height difference between the two rods. Is this an issue here?

Like for any adjustable metal rod, there is a small piece of plastic that is beveled and creates a rather smooth transition between both rods. But if you have curtains with a really tight pocket, it could be an issue. The professional trick with adjustable curtain rods is to buy them and install them so you end up with an invisible connection. I always select a length that will allow me to have mostly the thicker rod exposed, while the smaller rod is hidden in one corner and always covered by the gathered curtain. I have even bought the longest rods, 2 of them, and connected them in the middle while hiding the connection with a center bracket. There is nothing that shouts more "amateur and cheap" curtains than when you see the connection between the smaller and the thicker rod. Good luck.

Has anyone seen rust or pitting on the rod if you have had for some time?

We have only had for two months, but is seems to be something that will hold up and not piit or rust. Only time will tell.
