If this is solar powered, why does it need a battery?

It lasts for years. The solar is working but at night there is no solar so it uses the battery. I was not able to open one of these to replace the battery but it lasted maybe 10 years. This is a good product.

Does this have a "kickstand" to elevate the display?

Yes. It is about a 1/2" when in place.

How do you figure from cost to markdown

It is not clear what type of calculation you are attempting. Some financial calculations are described in the manual.
