Bill & Gloria Gaither: The Old Rugged Cross

The feel of old fashioned tent meeting songs!
The Old Rugged Cross and its partner DVD Tent Revival are most recent tapings. This one is special, the look, the wide scope of the tent as in the old 50s and 60s tent meeting sings, and taped at the Billy Graham Library in North Carolina. There are not too many of the classic and beloved Old Timers anymore, but Ben Speer is here and he sings the title song, "The Old Rugged Cross" and this is wonderful, because as a longtime Music Director of the Gaither Homecoming Concerts, we don't see Ben sing too often. If you like the classic "His Eye is On the Sparrow", you can enjoy that with the rich and powerful voice of Larnell Harris. Jason Crabb sings "Sometimes I Cry".But the highlight of the concert performance is the opening acts, one of my favorites, "Life's Railway to Heaven", "Tabernacle", and a fun, beautiful "Heavenly Surprise" with the Hoppers, and some great music my The Gatlin Brothers, "Greatly Blessed, Highly Favored". Also here are the Oak Ridge Boys.Included are some very loved classics.. " I Will Meet You In the Morning" and "Sheltered in the Arms of God".Bill Gaither chats with Bev O'Shea, now at the younger looking age of 102 and we see a tour of the Billy Graham Library by Franklin Graham. There is a companion to this DVD, called Bill & Gloria Gaither: Tent Revival Homecoming , and Bill Gaither promises four hours of music! I love this one, the song choices, the Friends, the setting, and the old convention song feeling.....Rizzo

Bill & Gloria, with their Homing Friends really dressed for this tent meeting-type production
"In Christ Alone" -sung by the Booth Brothers would be -if there were no more- worth the price. What a song, and such a blessing. / "Sometimes I Cry," sung by Jason Crabb (& written by his father), is right on, -what a sweet thing to share! / Another song that I always enjoy very much is, "That Sounds Like Home to Me" -GVB. /Gaithers' productions (CD/DVDs) are of such a variety, one has to deduce that there is something for almost everyone. I think these good people put a lot of thought into what we might like to see and hear. Now ain't that nice? It's fun to find out what is available to get me through the rough spots, and to remind me -in so many ways that I should not be anxious. Besides it is good music. The Gaithers have such a variety that almost anyone could find their pleasure as to style and lyrics, and we can learn some history and geography too, in these DVDs.PMT

The Gaither Ministry
Praise God for the Gaither's ministry! They bring to life so many of the songs I grew up with and still cherish to this day. I miss the traditional songs in churches today, most services are geared to the contemporary music to attract the youth. As Christians the youth are our future but let us not forget the foundations of gospel music. It warms my heart to hear these songs and the blessings flow from heaven! Praise God.

Just as his Amazing Grace video is the B side to the How ...
I'm learning something about how Gaither markets his videos. This could be considered the B side to Tent Revival. Just as his Amazing Grace video is the B side to the How Great Thou Art video. There are other examples as well. While most of the music is pretty good on his videos, they do make some very strange editing choices when they decide to cut into the actual music. Frankly, for my taste, there is just way too much talking on his videos. Most of those boring introductions do nothing to enhance the music or make you appreciate the song any more. If the song has a real story behind it then it is appropriate for a bit more of an introduction. An example would be "It is Well" or "Amazing Grace." Those songs may need some historical context. But most of the time that is not what is being provided. It is just someone's mindless musings attempting to sound spiritual. Those intros do not work.

One of my favorite recordings...
This is set as an old fashioned camp meeting revival...and the various featured artists make the listener feel right at home...Interviews with Billy Graham and George Beverly Shea lend an aura of education and interest....

old rugged saints bring praise and revival
Another Gaither dvd - there's lots of them. But this is distinctive having been filmed in a large tent in the grounds of the Billy Graham library and the homecoming team have dressed up in 40's and 50's gear (a mixed result on the fashion sense front- I hope this look doesn't come back!). As always the film quality and the standard of the music is high. Indeed there are some moments when it does seem as if revival is breaking out in their midst and they are really caught up in the worship.A few highlights for me - Larry Gatlin has written a piece called "Greatly blessed, highly favoured" - it's one of those pieces that really grabs you with the fantastic truth it contains and the simple power of the music. Another highlight is when the Booth brothers perform "In Christ alone" by Stewart Townsend - this is such a powerful song, and well delivered - one of those strong worship moments in the dvd.Alongside the worship this is also memorable for an interview with 102 year old George Beverley Shea - what a marvellous old saint he is. We also get to see Cliff Burrows and Billy Graham himself in a very rare interview. The dvd reminds us of our heritage when so many came to Christ through revival meetings - and the great sense of joy in being caught up in these special events. Some could criticise it for being to nostalgic but I would say just sit back and enjoy the fun that comes from remembering God's blessings in the past and let it push you on to expect more in the future!

Music, History, Interviews
This music video takes place in a modern revival tent where Billy Graham's library is located. People are wearing clothes that may have been from the 40's and 50's and the music is classic gospel and a bit of bluegrass too. One of the interviews is with George Beverly Shea at the age of 102. Another is of Billy Graham and his life as a young boy on his dad's farm. The music is excellent. Mark Lowry does his funny jokes with Bill Gaither and many of the Bill Gaither groups are featured and some of the histories of their parents and grandparents are told. Uplifting and energizing. Totally enjoyable.
