It's all metal. Pretty sturdy overall.

Yes, that could work. It's certainly sturdy enough to lay a laptop on it, and you can flatten out the top to easily set something light on it. You can see an example of a laptop sitting on the stand, if you look through descriptions on Amason. Unfortunately, you will have to figure out a way to secure that laptop. The stand itself, is not designed to secure a laptop or anything else for that matter. . I use this stand nearly every day. It's lightweight and sturdy, and it folds up so that I can put it in the outside pocket of my guitar case. It was a good buy for me.

Q: Is it sturdy enough to write on?

OK if you just want to make some quick notes, but if you're making a lot of changes or writing a part I'm not sure. If you really need to bear down, I'd say no. It's not as sturdy as an orchestra stand, but it is more portable. As a portable, it's sturdier than some others I've had. Hope that helps.
