Desktop connected slowly
Bought this product for my desktop PC (Windows XP) after moving router downstairs as stupid Sky box doesn't have wireless. Setup was very simple, installed software first from supplied CD, plugged in usb stick and seconds later I was online. I have an excellent signal strength even though the PC and router are on different floors, although our house is that big nor the walls particularly thick. I am only connected at 54Mbps (g) as I'm still waiting for my (n) router upgrade from Sky. As such also not yet tried the push button to connect securely.NOTE: the product pictured is not the one received. There is a customer image on the main page too, this is what I received. The product I received appears to be the newer (latest) version of the product according to the netgear website so very happy with this. The latest version comes with a cradle with usb extension so the stick can sit on your desk should you want to see it or move for better reception I presume.UPDATE: Been using this product for the past month now and have noted some issues. Main one is at least once per session the signal drops and I have to select the Repair option to get connected again. Second is the my PC appears to run slower since installation (not a huge amount but it is noticeable, it is an old XP machine). Third since I receive my new Sky (n) router it only connects at 65Mbps, rather than the 150Mbps I expected. This is something to do with channels but safe to say I'm not impressed. Downgraded review from 5 to 3 star, which may even be a bit generous.ANOTHER UPDATE: Been using this product for over a year now and not impressed. It still drops frequently (once a day), but I didn't realise how bad the product was until I got my NAS box. Until then the connection had seemed ok as my Sky broadband connection is only around 3Mbps so basically any connection fast than this from the adapter would have been fine. However now I have my NAS (basically another PC where I store my file so have to transfer them over the network) I've noticed a huge difference in transfer speeds between the computer using this adapter and my laptop (even when it is upstairs next to the PC), especially large photos from my camera (around 5MB). The PC effectively became unusable and I did all work via the laptop for a while. The Sky offered a free wireless booster. I'm not using it as a booster though, just a replacement wireless adapter (it isn't advertised as this but works a treat!). I downloaded a free network speed test tool (LAN speed test) to test the connection speeds. It turns out this Netgear adapter was only getting around 5Mbps which the Sky one gets between 33-42Mbps (so 7-8 times faster) which is roughly the speed of my laptop upstairs. Hence I have now downgraded to 1 star, this is only suitable for connection your PC to a slow (<5Mbps) broadband connection, and even then there must be better ones out there for the same price. Hopeless.

I've had it 3 weeks...UPDATE AFTER 10 MONTHS
... and I'm still not sure!Good price, good delivery etc from Amazon.I have a 6 years old desk top PC, and a brand new Brightbox router (from Orange). Old Speedtouch Adapter not compatible with new router.Netgear seemed a reasonable price and the reviews were as good as any. When it arrived the product box was in French, and only French on the leaflet. Insert the CD - but it took many attempts to get my PC to read this. Dodgy CD or CD reader? Eventually it opened but it still took ages to install the software. I went off to do something else for a while. The CD was in English though. What was not explained was the little button on the side of the Adapter - I'm sure it is supposed to link the Adapter and the specific router to enable immediate connection to the internet without any clicking in menus each time the PC is started up. Probably supposed to enhance security too. But when you press the little button you get a little on screen dialogue box which makes it obvious what to do (but it does not explain why, nothing in 'Help' either).Anyway, this little button connector doesn't do what it is supposed to do. I'm not sending it back to Amazon (it's not their fault) as it only takes a couple of clicks on the Netgear menu to connect to the internet. So that's one reason why am I still not sure. My connection speed has gone up from a stated 56 Mbps to 65 Mbps (in the router dialogue box) and 72 Mbps in the Netgear window. It appears to be more stable and consistent. But this could be the new router. Signal strength 'very good' 4 bars out of 5, about 20 feet through 1 outside wall and a window. But connection to the internet still drops out briefly about once a week. Is that the BT exchange or my hardware? (Rural town). It looks nice with its blue light, and it came with a USB extension so it sits on the desk in direct line with the router.UPDATE now end of June 2013 so 10 months of use. We still connect via the Netgear menu but this is no hardship - just 2 or 3 clicks. Occasional drop outs but I suspect this is local telephone services or perhaps my router. Anyway the Adapter does its job. I've added a star to make it 4 stars.

Incompatible with Windows 8
The product details should make it clear that this adapter will not work with Windows 8 unless an update is downloaded first. Having wasted time trying to install it and eventually realising it had to be an incompatibility problem, I rang the helpline and the guy on the other end of the phone (and on a different continent) tried to direct me to the download. Unfortunately, Netgear's server is down and so it wasn't possible. I now have to ring back after 24 hours to try again. I asked if I couldn't just download it myself and install on the new machine, but was told it was very technical and I would need to be talked through it! Thankfully, I have another computer to eventually do this on. If I didn't, it would be even more inconvenient than it already is. Windows 8 has been out for over 6 months and there was enough prior warning of its launch, so I'm surprised that there are still so many adapters around with this problem. People generally buy them in tandem with a new computer, so I imagine I'm not alone in having to sort out this issue. Had I known it was incompatible, I would have found one that would work with Windows 8 and been spared this palaver.Update: Having got this adapter up and running, it disconnects every time I log off the Internet and won't reconnect simply by pressing the button. This one is going back!

Great product - would recommend!
I've been using a cheap usb adapter that was supplied with my pc, and have been having difficulty receiving a wifi signal from my downstairs router. After a little research I decided to try this product, as it had received favourable reviews and was for sale at a reasonable price. The adapter was easy to set up - just pop in the CD and follow the instructions. Managed to connect without any problems, and the connection seems to be strong and fast. The long cable and cradle supplied with the adapter are a handy addition as I can move the adapter away from possible signal interference.Couldn't be happier with this product, and would definitely recommend!

Good
Bought this so that my desktop could be moved to another part of the house on wireless. Delivery quick and setting up the desktop was straight forward. Main phone line input in another room about 5 metres away and two wall between wireless modem and desktop. Bit disappointed with the strenght of the signal which is low, expected to be at least good, will need to re-position wireless modem in another room to improve signal. But can use the desk top but is slow to recieve, laptop when used in the garden is better so do not know if it is the desktop which is not correct. But still worthwhile purchasing and a good bit of kit.
