Can i use it as a normal counter?

Yes, you can. Pressing a button causes numbers to increase by one. Dial rolls to reset to zero when you are finished.

How does it reset automatically? Do you have to wind it thru all the numbers

To reset it, you roll the black wheel backwards and it goes from 1111 to 2222 to 3333 to 4444 to 5555 to 6666 to 7777 to 8888 to 9999 then to 0000 and it is ready to count again. It takes about 3 seconds to reset it.

Does it count to zero?

Starts at zero and counts to 9999 and then returns to 0000

No it is not but that did not prevent it from working. Mine hangs on my bay boat that is used in salt water. Lasted about 2 years before needing replacement. A shot of penetrating oil would not have hurt it.
