Q: can you write with sharpie on them?

Yes I have written on them with sharpies. It will wear off over time but you can just write on them again.

Q: Are there actually 102 1" blocks? Or is 102 the density or something??? Seems like a lot for the price.

There is 102 1" cube blocks, they are made of foam and come in 6 different colors (comes in a clear plastic bag, very light in weight).

Q: are these all separate and perfect cubes?

Yes, they are individual 1" by 1" by 1" cubes.

Q: Do these cubes compress like a sponge? Can I hold let's say 5 in a closed hand?

No they don’t compress. They are more like soft dice.
