Q: How fast can you drive with one of these on your car with a camera attached?

I have driven 60 plus with it on. It hold super well but you have to make sure that both suction surface and paint/surface are free from dust and grime. You can attach it and tug hard and you will not get it off.

Q: Can the ball joints be removed to eliminate the extension arm, so the camera can mount directly to the frame? Ideally this would eliminate shake.

Yes you can remove the ball joint where the extension was connected. The ball joint was screwed by the inner hexagon shape size T25 (Torx Hexagon Wrench).

Q: Is this good for a DSLR (5D or similar) ??

This mount holds my 5D Mkiii with a 24-105 lens no problem. the only problem I have had, is if you are mounting it to glass, and trying to shoot looking out of the same glass, the legs aren't long enough for that lens. You'll have to buy an extension.

Q: Could you attach this to the interior of a car, like on the windshield or dashboard?

Yes, it attaches to the windshield, but I haven't found a way to attach it to the windshield and have your camera pointed OUT the windshield. I've found you can only attach it so the camera is pointed toward the interior of the car. If anyone knows how to set it up to point your camera out the windshield with 3 suction cups I would really appreciate it.
