Pretty good movie
This is not going to be like the conjuring or like the Amityville horror but for a low budget horror movie, it's actually pretty good! The twist at the end was awesome!

From GHOST STORIES opening narration: "...Come with me into the very cradle of darkness where those who dwell, dwell alone!"
This review is specific to the ECHO BRIDGE flipdisc that offers as a bonus their Vol. 5 of the late-1990's supernatural anthology half-hour, GHOST STORIES, a cable show hosted by unseen Rip Torn. (If the DVD cover you're looking at doesn't have a red BONUS banner near the bottom, it doesn't contain these eight shows.).THE HAUNTING OF WINCHESTER HOUSE is yet another take on the "I see dead people" plot device popularized by Herk Harvey's classic frighter, CARNIVAL OF SOULS (1962). "Winchester" fails miserably for technical reasons more than anything else. Nearly the entire 82 minutes is dark, with most scenes filmed through a heavy blue filter. The audio track, which ideally supports a story and heightens viewer emotions, doesn't fit on-screen action and is annoyingly overloud. As for pacing, I couldn't abide endless "creeping around the scary house" sequences and fast-scanned through them, which shortened the experience to less than an hour without obfuscating the plot. Acting was OK. (two stars)Not recommended..GHOST STORIESEach videotaped episode runs barely 20 minutes. Forty-four chapters of this program aired between 9/28/97 and 6/8/98. A cinematic horror masterwork!
What can I say about this unbelievable movie? If you only see one movie this year... butter that popcorn... climb into the armpit of the macabre. You have been warned.

Not worth the time
Honestly, it was good to play in the background while I worked on homework just for the noise. Luckily, the acting and the story was terrible enough that I didn't care to be distracted from reading the academic journal articles I am being forced to read. So obviously, it did the job perfectly. Now for specifics. The story was awful. It was about as much about the Winchester house as Sharknado would be about the weather (and honestly, I would have instead watched Sharknado). It was almost like the creator just heard the name of the house and the idea behind it, but didn't bother to do substantial research. Hell, a peek on Wikipedia would have helped. The acting was barely mediocre. Every line I heard felt like it was being read, particularly by the daughter. The script was also a significant hindrance to the actors. Maybe the acting could have been better if the script had been worth a damn. My biggest gripe about the acting/script was that the character of the daughter seemed like it had been written for a much younger actress. I feel like the writing was suited for maybe an 8 or 9-year-old instead of what appears to be someone who is around 12 or 13.Also, a small gripe, but something that bothered me was the costuming of the ghosts that were supposed to be older. Their clothes appeared to be too modern and not at all period-appropriate. That just ruined the immersion factor for me.Another issue was the very beginning. Who the HECK is that woman and why is she necessary for the plot? She is never once mentioned again.TLDR: Awful movie, weak script, barely-there acting. Just a dumpster fire of a film.
