Q: Does “auto rewind” mean the hose is always trying to go back into the unit? Or does it stay out until you yank on it to start it back in.

It has ratcheting stopping that will alow you to stop it at any point with about 1-2 foot interval. Pull untill you hear the ratcheting, and stop. To let the hose back in, pull again and the hose will return.

Q: Can you set up to to run water through?

Q: the compressor connection seems to be a bolt.... rather than a female threaded connection. How do you attach the hose from the compressor to the reel?

Buy a Male Quick disconnect to screw onto the end of hose. Connection on reel is for a Quick Disconnect fitting. I believe the reel size is different. We got both reals and I do not think a 50' hose will mount on the 25' reel.
