Q: Cannot make it retract. I have another retractable that has a button. This doesn't. I need this for travel, so it must be retractable.

Pull apart both ends and then put your hands together and it should retract.

Q: Do this cable retracts on its own after pulling and letting go or is there a button I would have to push to retract it?

You have to pull the cable out and then let it retract. There is no button. The cables on both sides must be pulled out simultaneously and retracted simultaneously. It works well for me.

Q: Do these cable reels come large enough to accommodate a 10' hdmi cable?

It comes with the cord already in it so whatever length you order will be the length of the cable
