“B” movie heaven
I have to admit I enjoyed the movie more than I thought I would. For what it was (did they used to call them “Sword and sandals “ movies. It is definitely not for younger viewers as it is quite graphic. And it’s theme has been more “Adultified” if I can put it that way. It’s dialogue Is more grown up. Some swearing, but not over the top and no gratuitous nudity. Performances from all the actors Is top notch, which again raises the film above what you expect, and Dywane Johnson again shows why he’s the number one action star at the moment (just pipping Vin Diesel). He can do all the physical stuff, but he can actually act and convey emotion. And I must admit I’m still a fan of 3D, and when the 3D Is done well, as not all are. It really is enjoyable, the spear coming out of the screen and literally touching the tip of your nose a good highlight. These films don’t win Oscars, there Main purpose is to give you two hours of good old fashioned utter hokum, and this one delivers in spades.

The man and the myth
Another movie all about the ancient hero Hercules. Stories of the legendary hero have been told and retold many times down the years. Thus like all such stories and movies about a character who has been in the public domain for longer than copyright laws have existed, this is a completely fresh take on a familiar source. Although in the case the source is actually a graphic novel Hercules: The Thracian Wars which came up with it's own take on the character.Hercules is a legend. A man who has completed the twelve labours. And a man whose reputation both precedes him and which has also made him somewhat larger than life. A point made during a decent opening in which his nephew spins some tales about his uncle.Hercules [Dwayne Johnson] and his group of fellow warriors have been fighting for a long time. Have pasts they are haunted by. And are thinking about it possibly being the time to settle down. One last job for a King [John Hurt] might be what they need in order to achieve that aim. But their last battle turns out to be not quite what they expected. Can Hercules rediscover who he is in time to save the day? This is what they call a sword and sandal movie, and as such it strives for realism over fantasy. All the battle sequences do try hard to look like realistic combat. The whole film as well has a washed out and sandy look to it.It does try to be both grim and gritty and look at the horrors of combat. Consider the difference between a myth and it's reality. Put the lead character on a hero's journey, as he has to come to terms with past trauma and move forward. And do a bit of humour as well. In many ways it tries to do a lot of what the cult tv Hercules series of the 1990's did [not a show all may be familiar with, thanks to somewhat limited uk exposure. If not, check it out, as it was great]. But this being a blockbuster movie means it doesn't have quite the intelligence or the time to manage that. Thus it is a little disjointed in tone and can shift between things. The supporting cast are all pretty good, but John Hurt as the King and Ian McShane as one of Hercules' band, a seer who is highly conscious of his own mortality, do steal the show from all around them thanks effortlessly strong acting. The latter managing some very nice self depreciating humour as well. But this isn't a bad film at all. It's a capable production. It's got good spectacle and fight scenes and a decent cast. It also manages to shift gear slightly for the final act just when it needs to. It allows John Hurt to be a bit more than wise old kindly gentleman, and he does make the most of the material he gets.Ultimately, it's a good bit of entertaining escapism. So whilst it's not perhaps quite the movie it could have been, it's a fun watch if you're in the right mood. So for that, it's well worth a look. There is one single bit of strong language. Which frankly is rather gratuitious as a result. The dvd has the following language and subtitle options:Languages: English.Subtitles: English. It's also English audio captioned. It begins with a couple of trailers, which can be skipped via the next button on the dvd remote.Extras are:A commentary from the director and the producer.Three featurettes:Dwayne Johnson and Brett Ratner: an introduction. A look at the film, which runs for five minutes.Hercules and his mercenaries: all about the supporting characters and cast. Runs for Ten minutes. The effects of Hercules: All about how certain sequences were done. Which runs for eleven minutes. All of these, thanks to some good interviewees, in particular Dwayne Johnson, are pretty good and worth watching.

Marvellous Entertainment
No time for resting with this fast paced action movie that will have you running everywhere. Marvellous acting plus the storyline is great so what else is left to say about this story. Well first I enjoyed it all the way through and was entertained that I couldn't move from my favourite chair. Now that is saying something isn't it. In this a new terrifying enemy threatens the innocent, so Hercules has got to use all his powers and wits to outdo this new threat. So that I must add overwhelming odds that is the usual thing isn't it. I rated this an A grade plus for sheer entertainment that had you hook from start to end and not losing an inch of peace, so what are you waiting for, munchies in one hand and movie in the other just waiting for the queue in front to move so I can get settled in the chair and put my feet up. Enjoy!

Hercules ( A Great Film)
I watched this without knowing anything about it. What an unexpected surprise it was. I found the story engaging with each of the characters given their own brief individual background story. But it was done in such a way that it didn`t slow down the story and always held your interest. The story itself is pacy, full of action with some great set pieces that are really well executed. Dwayne Johnson is superb as Hercules, this is a role he was born to play, of course he is terrific in the action scenes but he also brings a depth to the character that will have you cheering him on throughout the movie. The production values are very good and the budget of 100 million dollars is evident on screen in some terrific huge set pieces. As you can gather I loved it and this movie is recommended as excellent family entertainment for all ages.

The Best Take on the Hercules' Legend
Last summer saw a rebirth of the Hercules legend with its genesis in Hollywood with Mr. America/Pro. Universe, Steve Reeves (the muscle man who was featured in comic books that created a generation of bullied youths who took up the sport with the view of payback) which later featured Arnold Schwarzenegger's role model as an aspiring bodybuilder in Austria, the next major champion to defeat Steve Reeves as Mr. Pro. Universe, U.K.'s Reg Park (who was given first class travel arrangements and accommodations for his role), which will later be played by Lou Ferrigno (who had the most successful run of Hercules movies and whom most cinema audiences associate with the Hercules franchise), a role which Arnold will later assume in the box office flop Hercules in New York; given the fact that the last Hercules movie featuring Arnold was in the seventies, Renny Harlin figured it was time to reboot the entire franchise with a box office flop entitled, The Legend of Hercules, in the same manner that Rupert Wyatt deemed necessary to reboot the critically acclaimed Planet of the Apes franchise that was based on Pierre Boulle's Ape Planet, which had a successful run in the seventies as a box office trilogy and was serialized for TV - given its unsuccessful reboot as a franchise by Tim Burton, resulting in a similar reboot to the Hercules franchise this summer in a phenomenal box office hit by Brett Ratner, featuring awesome CGI by Double Negative, and the most awesome physique since Arnold and Lou - with Dwayne Johnson, playing Hercules and the handsome Ingrid Bolso Berdal playing Atalanta, the only female heroine, with Hercules being commissioned by King Eurystheus to serve as protector of Rome to defeat twelve mythical creatures that was threatening the empire, which was supposedly sent by his father, Zeus' wife, Hera, to task Hercules owing to jealousy over her husband having mated with a mortal woman, Hercules' mother, Alcmene, following which he butchered Hercules's family and spread rumors to the effect that Hercules had butchered his wife, Megara, and their children, and, having done so, banished Hercules from Rome, following which Hercules transforms into a mercenary for hire and finds himself being commissioned by Lord Coty to train an army of peasant to rise against Rhesus (which gave birth to Obama and John Kerry's strategy in Syria and Iraq) - who was the only one who rose in protest against Lord Cotys after he has poisoned Ergenia's husband to claim the throne, with Hercules, eventually, uncovering the truth from Ergenia and turning against Lord Cotys, who was colluding with King Eurystheus in an attempt at world conquest, and, having done so, discovering Hercules defying him, and unearthing the truth about what King Eurystheus did to his family, and, thereby, turning against the invincible army he had trained and successfully defeating them, defying the prediction of his oracle, Amphiaraus - who had prophesized Hercules' and his own death, thereby, claiming his rightful place as the legend of a true hero, which resides in each and everyone one of us as Mariah Carey implied in her song, Hero.
