Small and fantastic
Works well and probably the smallest blu-ray player you can get. Worked on every blu-ray so far and those range from old ones to new ones.Movie menus are quick and responsive. Picture quality seems to be excellent and the remote gives you all the controls you need.Overall, this is an extremely capable small form player.

Great for Watching European Discs Abroad
This UK version of the BDP-S1700 is ideal for watching European Blu-ray discs (Region B) and DVDs (Region 2) in the USA, where I live. I highly recommend it.The UK BDP-S1700 comes with a 100-240 V, 50/60 Hz power brick (right side in both photos). You can use this anywhere in the world; all you need is a cable with a local plug and a standard Figure-8 (C7 non-polarized) plug.I am saving the included UK mains-to-Figure 8 cable to use with my laptop charger, on my next trip to the UK. This cable is beautifully constructed, with a replaceable 3 A fuse integrated into the mains plug, consistent with superior UK safety norms.[For my European friends looking to watch USA Blu-ray discs (Region A) and DVDs (Region 1), the USA BDP-S1700, which I also own, is not so versatile. That version comes with a USA-only, 120 V, 60 Hz wall-plug adapter (left side in both photos).]Turning to the Sony BDP-S1700's inherent qualities...I've found the Sony to be quieter than similarly-priced models from other brands, notably Samsung. It's nice to be able to watch a disc without noticing the hum of the player's motor.Sony provides regular firmware updates on its (country-specific) support Web sites. I have successfully updated my BDP-S1700 players by USB memory device and wired Ethernet.I recommend disconnecting this and any other entertainment device from your network, in day-to-day use. It almost certainly sends back information about the discs you watch and the other devices on your network. If, like most people, you have weak security settings on your home router, entertainment devices also become easy prey for "botnets".The on-screen menus are tacky, slow, and unintuitive. Low-cost players from Sony, Samsung, and generic brands seem to use similar off-the-shelf, open-source user interface code. Such "apps" as are available for this platform all suck. For streaming video, save yourself the frustration and buy an Apple TV!The omission of optical digital audio output is worth noting; only an RCA-type coaxial digital audio port is provided.

Very Impressed
After buying a new Sony tv i decided that that the Sony dvd player that we have had for several years needed upgrading, having looked at many it became clear that a Blu Ray player could be had for the same price as a dvd player, so not wanting 4K ability and having the new Sony tv i bought this little box and i am extremely happy that i picked it, it is very small and discreet but it packs a lot in, apart from the obvious disc player it also has a whole host of app's that make it very smartFirst trying it out with a dvd of Lord Of The Rings i was very impressed by the quality and sharpness of the picture, audio playing through my Orbitsound T12 was even more impressive with the rumbles and explosions of the battle scenes right there in the room but with the rest of the soundstage clearly audible as wellthe first Blu Ray played was the BFG, as would be expected the picture quality is superb on the 1080p tv and again the sound simply blows you away, the little box is very quick to respond to the remote, something that i had not appreciated with the previous dvd player as i now realise how slow that had been, the remote itself is also quite small but it is perfectly sized and shaped to make it easy to usethere are many app's on this player including Amazon video and Netflix, which has it's own dedicated quick launch button and the other app's can be sorted into favourites etci am extremely happy with this Blu Ray player and considering it cost no more than many dvd players i think it is an absolute bargain and i recommend it for any one who like me has no desire to get into 4K just yet but would like to get the most out their dvd and Blu ray discs.
