These are essential when using heavy monitors attached to a clamp-on multi-monitor mount. That is especially true with RTA (ready-to-assrmble) furniture, which is almost always made of particle board.

If you've got a hollow/IKEA desk, please get these for mounting support
Ergotron desk mounts have a pretty wide base, but for the other arm I've mounted to my desk, I wanted more support (since it was holding 30+ pound monitor!).This is a simple metal plate that includes some padding on the inside surfaces. Physics dictates that it will help distribute the force from a small area to a larger area, lessening the strain on that specific part of the desk where the arm is mounted.It seems sturdy and inflexible - which is what you want for something like this!
