Durable even in my circus of a home.
I don't buy a lot of these sorts of items and at the time they were a considerable splurge. But after 5 years and heavy use by three children, the cards are still holding up really well. They clean easily and none have chipped or cracked. I'm absolutely not a fussy mom when it comes to protecting toys, so if they have held up in my house this long I would say they've earned their keep. Very useful for teaching letters and spelling.

Great Method for Teaching Kids
My wife and I have long been fans of Montessori's teaching style, and these sand paper letters fall right in line with that style. Kids can hold each piece in their hand and trace the letter, which is formed from sand paper, giving it a contrast in texture. The idea is that kids who can touch and feel a letter are better able to conceptualize the letter, making an easier transition into reading and writing. For us, it was a total success. Our kids have each known the alphabet thoroughly before turning 3. It takes work and little perseverance, but it pays off.

it looks like they paste a sort of grainy substance on it
I really thought this material would last a long time, but it's already chipping away on the corners. I bought the letters and numbers, and chipping is happening to both sets. Also, the shape of the letter is not done with sand paper, it looks like they paste a sort of grainy substance on it, but since its glued on, the grainy substance is rubbing off on certain parts of the letters--which is the whole point in buying these! We've only had them for a couple of months; i don't think they are good quality materials. I think we'll be fine since we only have one child, but if your hope is to have these materials for a long time and plan to use them with several children, I would recommend you look elsewhere.

The first tactile needed. Engages visually, tactile, hand-eye coordination, really supports early reading and reinforces memorization of letters.
